Washington, D.C. – Today, National League of Cities (NLC) CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony issued the following statement after the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform released draft legislation that includes $350 billion in emergency relief for state and local governments:

“We are deeply encouraged that Congress is listening to the voices of local leaders and is finally advancing the critical relief that municipalities need to help our communities across America recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. We applaud the House Committee on Oversight and Reform for introducing legislation that will provide direct, flexible aid to all 19,000 cities, towns and villages across the country under a fair and proven allocation formula that will deliver support to municipalities of all sizes.

“Local leaders have been clear for months: our national recovery starts at the local level, and we need support from our partners in the federal government to help keep our frontline workers employed and arm local governments with the resources to continue fighting back against the pandemic. NLC and its members are thankful for the swift and comprehensive work of Chairwoman Maloney and the Committee and will continue to push to ensure the passage of these essential relief funds in the Committee markup this week and beyond.”
