WCSD Board of Trustees Appoints Dr. Susan Enfield as New Superintendent of Schools
WCSD Board of Trustees Appoints Dr. Susan Enfield as New Superintendent of Schools
Reno, NV. (April 26, 2022) – During a special public meeting, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Susan Enfield to serve as superintendent of the Washoe County School District. Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill will retire on June 30.
Dr. Enfield has served as superintendent of schools for Highline Public Schools in Burien, Washington since 2012, and has also worked for Seattle Public Schools and Portland Public Schools. She is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and Harvard University, where she earned her doctorate. During her tenure at Highline Public Schools, she and her staff made significant strides in closing achievement and opportunity gaps for students and raised the graduation rate from 62 percent in 2013 to more than 83 percent in 2021.
The Board of Trustees hired The Bryan Group (TBG) to coordinate the search for Dr. McNeill’s replacement. Beginning in January, TBG recruited representatives for a Search Advisory Group (SAG) which was tasked with:
- collecting community data via interviews, focus groups, and surveys
- screening superintendent applications
- conducting and analyzing short interviews
- analyzing long interviews
- arranging and conducting onsite visits for the five candidate finalists
- assisting TBG in creating candidate recommendations for the Board of Trustees
Members of the community— including families, students, business representatives, and District employees— were invited to meet the five finalists on April 18 and were also invited to attend public Board meetings where the candidates were interviewed by Trustees. In addition, the community had an opportunity to submit input about the candidates via an online survey. This information was provided to the Board of Trustees prior to the meeting, where public comment was also welcomed.
The Board of Trustees will now begin negotiations with Dr. Enfield surrounding contract terms that will be included in the initial offer of employment.
