Things are about to explode. Universal just released the first live trailer for Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film Oppenheimer, about the making of the atomic bomb.
Based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy as theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, widely credited as the father of the atomic bomb. The live teaser trailer serves as a countdown to Oppenheimer's release, down to the millisecond. “The world is changing, reforming. This is your moment,” a woman says, as atoms move about on screen. Then the ever-updating countdown appears over black and white footage of a bowler hat and pipe—two Oppenheimer staples. ”How can this man who sees so much be so blind?" says a male voice as the ticking intensifies.
The atoms coalesce into a fiery ball when another man shouts, “the force from which the sun draws its power has been loose," leading to an explosion revealing the title card: “From Christoper Nolan."
"You gave them the power to destroy themselves and made him the most important man who has ever lived,” a voice intones as Murphy's Oppenheimer adjusts the bowler hat in the window. Finally, we see Oppenheimer's face as he walks down a long hallway and someone calls him “the man who moved the earth.”
Oppenheimer boasts a large and impressive cast which includes Murphy, Michael Angarano, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Matthew Modine, Jack Quaid, Benny Safdie and Florence Pugh. It's Nolan's first major film since leaving his longtime studio home of Warner Bros, where he made The Dark Knight, Inception, and most recently Tenet.
Oppenheimer hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
