Welcome to the Division of Human Genetics
The Division of Human Genetics at the UTRGV School of Medicine focuses on the study of basic principles of genetics and genomics as applied to human disease. Using both experimental models and population-based approaches, the Division has ongoing programs of research in experimental genomics, statistical and population-based genetics, bioinformatics, and translational research.
About
The Division is dedicated to working on common diseases with high prevalence in South Texas, including diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver disease. Research examines the application of basic genetic principles and strategies in studying disease mechanisms, disease susceptibility, and gene-environment interactions.
A large portion of the Division’s research is conducted through the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI), a comprehensive interdisciplinary Institute within the School of Medicine, which has enjoyed sustained extramural funding for many years.
Our UTRGV Human Genetics research team is making history. We are dedicated to enhancing the health care needs of individuals and the quality of life for families in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
