Richard Gerald Jansen Obituary

Richard (Dick) Gerald Jansen passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, February 12, four days before his 89th birthday.

Richard was born to Richard George Jansen and Dorothy Sadie (Schneider) Jansen on February 16, 1934.

He graduated in 1952 from West High School in Green Bay, WI and obtained an undergrad degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After an honorable discharge from the army, he relocated to Berkeley, California to continue his education. It was there that he met his future wife, Margaret (Peg) Huffman.  They were married on January 3, 1962, and moved back to Wisconsin for his employment as a social worker in Winnebago County.

Richard and Peg started their family in Oshkosh with the birth of their eldest daughter, Mary, followed closely by their son, Mark.  The young family moved to Green Bay and in 1964 welcomed one more child, Beth Ann.

Richard had taken a job with the Wisconsin Department of Public Welfare, Division of Children & Youth. He became County Services Supervisor of the Brown, Marinette, Menominee, Outagamie and Oconto Departments of Public Welfare, Child Welfare Services.

His old car collection started in 1965 with a 1950 Packard, a car still in his possession!

Richard was approached by George Kress in late 1967 to head a newly-formed local chapter of the American Foundation of Religion & Psychiatry - a position he held for one year.

In 1969, Richard joined the newly-created University of Wisconsin at Green Bay - UWGB - as a lecturer in Liberal Education Seminars, also teaching parttime in social work and education.

In 1971, he moved the family to the old Kermit Hansen farm in Denmark, WI. It came with several large outbuildings to house his growing car collection.  Shortly after moving to the farm, Richard started collecting toys which he continued throughout his life.

Richard retired from UWGB in 1992 after an illustrious career as Director of the Student Development & Counseling Center, Director of the Student Health Center, and Assistant Dean of Students. He was well respected in his profession as acknowledged by numerous students, co-workers, and then UWGB Chancellor, Ed Weidner.

Richard and Peg began to winter in Bradenton, Florida in 2003.  They eventually became Florida residents, spending half the year in the warmth.  Richard loved nothing more than to sit on Lido Beach watching the boats and soaking up the sunshine.

Richard is survived by his wonderful wife, Peg, of 61 years; His children:  Mary (Curt) Krueger; Mark (Julie) Jansen; Beth Ann (Dale) Roberts; Grandchildren:  Alex (Rob) Neuville, Caiti Dvorak, Kaeley Myklebust, Nicholas (Breanna) Krueger, Sarah and Jessica Roberts; Great grandchildren:  Carter Jansen, Occie Jansen, Addysen Dworak, Zander Neuville and Baby Girl Krueger expected May 4th.  Siblings: Patricia (Bob) Kessler, Tommy (Liz) Jansen, Julie Muesbeck , as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Susie Jansen, brothers-in-law Dave Stubbs and Dan Muesbeck, and great grandson Everett George Neuville.

Richard did not want a funeral or celebration of his life. As a regular contributor to causes he believed in, he would value a contribution in his name to your favorite charity or cause.
