ABSTRACT

A photo in a magazine advertisement shows friends relaxing around a candlelit dinner table. Through the window, the sun sets behind snow-capped mountain peaks. In the foreground, a kayaker paddles across a lake. The caption below describes a new condominium complex with residences that “showcase dramatic lake and mountain views, complemented by the pleasures of pampered resort services, delightful amenities and a lakeside clubhouse.” All of this, the text continues, is just “moments from the urban charms of downtown Sandpoint, the premier resort town offering outdoor fun and family-friendly adventures.” On another page, the caption under the picture of a wooded landscape touts the opportunity to buy land with a national forest “at your doorstep.” More than a dozen similar eye-catching advertisements are peppered throughout the in-flight magazine, with most highlighting their proximity to public lands (Horizon Air 2004).
