Severe flooding leads city officials to close parts of Onondaga Creekwalk in Syracuse

Onondaga Creekwalk flooded

Syracuse city officials closed several sections of the Onondaga Creekwalk because of severe flooding and high water levels on the Onondaga Creek Thursday including the areas around Franklin Square.

Syracuse, N.Y. — City officials announced Thursday the closing of several sections of the Onondaga Creekwalk because of severe flooding and high water levels on the Onondaga Creek.

The city has blocked entrances to the Creekwalk where high water levels could impact the safety of residents. This includes the areas around Franklin Square and Interstate 690, Lower Onondaga Park, under the South Avenue bridge and the platform near Hunt Avenue.

City officials ask residents to avoid the Creekwalk until creek water levels lower.

“City staff from DPW, engineering, parks, police and fire are monitoring conditions on roads, around bridges and overpasses, and near bodies of water,” Mayor Ben Walsh said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “I’ve been out across the city and urge residents to use caution near any signs of flooding. The forecast appears to be improving, but until the high water recedes, conditions are still very dangerous.”

The Department of Parks Recreation and Youth Programs also reported that areas of some parks in the city are currently under water. The department asks residents to use caution because the water may be deeper than it appears and hazards could be hidden.
