Skyline Apartments to hire off-duty Syracuse cops for extra security after woman’s murder

Firefighters prepare to leave the Skyline building at 753 James St. on Feb. 25. Police have been called to the building at least 527 times since Sept. 1, including the homicide of an elderly woman discovered Wednesday.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The company that owns a 365-unit apartment complex where a 93-year-old woman was found murdered Wednesday will pay Syracuse police to monitor the building for the foreseeable future.

Troy Green, CEO of Green National, told Syracuse.com that the company will pay for off-duty police officers to patrol the building, in light of recent events.

“We think this will make an immediate difference to the security of the building,” Green said.

Green would not say when the patrols will occur, citing security reasons, or how much they would cost the owners.

“The Syracuse Police Department is going to be very involved with the property,” he said. “And management is committed to working with them.”

A police spokesman, Sgt. Matthew Malinowski, confirmed that the off-duty officers will keep watch “at various dates and times.” On-duty officers will also conduct extra patrols there, Malinowski said, though he provided no further details.

The company already has a security guard keeping watch at the building outside of business hours. It also recently re-hired off-duty sheriff’s deputies to supplement security after getting rid of them about six months ago, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Wednesday afternoon, Connie Tuori was found dead in her 12th-floor apartment. Police have released no suspect information or details about how she was killed.

City and police officials have long been frustrated with the lax security and poor maintenance at the building, which Mayor Ben Walsh has deemed “Public Nuisance No.1.”

Police have arrived there an average of three times a day since Sept. 1, and there have also been numerous ambulance and fire department calls.
