MISSION STATEMENT:
At Montclair WE strive to prepare students for future success by providing a healthy and safe environment where all students can be challenged, supported and engaged.
Leverty Letter
My thanks to the many families that have taken time to complete the Hybrid/CDL survey. This information helps us plan for our return to school date of April 5th, with vital staffing and transportation accommodations suited for our Hybrid model. If you haven’t done so, please complete the survey below. Additionally, if you have questions, or need support completing the survey, don’t hesitate to contact the Montclair office.
As we are talking about returning to school I wanted to take a moment to talk about how this transition might impact your daughter or son. Come April 2021, Montclair students will have been out of their actual school building for one year, from the start of the pandemic, and attrition of school culture and learner skills are certain to have set in. The structure of the classroom setting is much different than the structure of a student’s home, even when mom or dad is functioning as their surrogate teacher, so it is natural that this transition might bring uncertainty, hesitation, anxiety or frustration. Once students return to the classroom staff will spend time attending to students’ social emotional needs and encouraging a return to students’ traditional learning skill sets. While we’ll be jumping into our academics we’ll pay special attention to student disposition, so we can offer assistance to struggling students early on in their transition. We value your input during this process, as you might see behaviors or hear comments leading up to our return date. It is important that we all rally around our children during this time, so students can focus on their academic and social emotional successes. You might find this resource of value, as you support your child leading up to the transition. This document provides some considerations and basic steps to prepare students for the return to school: Tips For Families: Helping Children & Adolescents Transition Back To School.
Thank you,
Sean Leverty
Elementary Hybrid Survey
To prepare for our return to school date BSD is asking every currently enrolled family to decide whether they will remain in CDL or transition to in-person Hybrid. You may have already received the following BSD communique explaining the difference and offering directions for making your decision in ParentVUE. If you have not yet decided, please use the links below to make your decision by February 15th. Once the District knows how many will be remaining in CDL or attending in-person they can finalize staffing for those two learning environments.
Elementary Progress Report Guide
Dear Montclair Familes,
This week you will have access to your child's first semester progress report. The link below is a document that explains what the report will include and any changes from previous progress reports. I wanted to provide this information, so you were better informed when you access your child's progress report via ParentVUE.

Counselor's Corner
Hello Hawkeye Families,
This month in our SEL lessons we're continuing our discussions about the zones of regulation and moving towards our own coping strategies when we have big feelings
If you have a K-3rd grader have them tell you which breathing technique they are trying when in the blue, yellow or red zone.
Breathing Technique Ideas:
- Rainbow
- Dandelion
- Counting
- Belly
- Balloon
If you have a 3rd-5th grader they watched this quick video (3 min) and talked about what helps them cope with big, overwhelming feelings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVA2N6tX2cg
Talk with your students on what you (Yes you!) do to cope with your own big feelings. A family conversation is the best way for students to engage even more in coping skills.
Happy Coping,
Ms. Duncan

Avid for 6th Graders!
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system in all Beaverton middle and high schools and includes the AVID elective class during the school day. Your feeder middle school is looking for 35 students to be enrolled in the AVID elective class for next year.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective class, taken in addition to the academic core classes (humanities, math, science, and other required courses) at your middle school. It is based on writing as a tool for learning, the inquiry method, reading, organization, and collaborative grouping. Your feeder school’s AVID elective teacher is looking for 35 students to be enrolled next year.
AVID students selected for the AVID elective are...
- In the “academic middle” – meeting standards in all subject areas and passing standardized tests, but need a little extra support to do better
- Needing help with study skills and organizational skills
- Motivated to go to college but don’t quite know how or have resources at home
- Willing to work hard and study every night
- Historically underrepresented in 4-year universities (first one in the family to attend college, students coming from economically challenging situations, students of color, etc.)
- Facing special circumstances that make it difficult for them to actualize their college dream
Students must apply and interview to be in the AVID elective class. For more information, please see attached document. For application materials, contact Anne Duncan at anne_duncan@beaverton.k12.or.us. For more information about the AVID elective class, contact your feeder middle school. Application is due March 19, 2021 and must be submitted online.

Technology Information
Helpful Hints for students using Chromebooks:
- Is your Chromebook slow? Holding the power button for 30 seconds to turn it off and then turning it back on can clear up many issues
- Did you know that many updates to your Chromebook happen when you log off your Chromebook or shut it down? If you are in the habit of just closing the Chromebook when you're done with your class, try logging out at the end of the day at least once a week so the updates can happen

Appointments are available now!
The link to schedule an online Clothes for Kids Appointment is under the Families tab on the District's website. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or on Wednesdays between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
To see open appointment slots, families need to click on a calendar date that works for them, then select either a Large Family (4 or more students) or a Small Family (1 - 3 students). After they've indicated the family size, open appointments for a date selected will be on the right side of the screen. If times are not shown, either family size has not been selected or they need to select a different date on the calendar. They need to click on the time that works for them and then complete a short form to book the appointment. While online is best, families can all call 503-356-4322 to schedule an appointment. (Press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish.)
District staff are more than welcome to schedule appointments for families. When you book the appointment, if needed, you can leave your information under the contact questions and fill out the remainder of the form with the student's information. On the day of the appointment, families will be asked to complete another very short form with the student's information.
In addition to scheduling the appointment, if needed and appropriate, you can shop for the family. You would just need to have an idea of what the student needs, their sizes and preferences. If you'd like to shop for several students and/or families, please book a 45 min timeslot. Volunteers will be there to help you.
Appointments are not needed to make a donation. For the program, donations are best when the program is open during the times listed above. Or, there are two donation bins on the walkway in front of the program that are available Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
Thank you!
