Principal's Post - Parent Edition
September 7, 2021
Greetings!
I hope that you and your family had a restful Labor Day Weekend. I want to thank you for your support of Curriculum Night and our 1st PTO meeting of the year. I can already tell that this is going to be a wonderful school year and I am excited about what is on the horizon:-)
Parents, please help us to keep all children safe by sending your child to school with a mask each day; and by keeping your child home if they are sick. If your child has a fever, runny nose, cough, or vomiting; they must stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. Furthermore, if your child tests positive for COVID, please notify your child's teacher and keep your child home for a minimum of 10 days. Thank you in advance for working with us to keep all children safe.
As we move through this week, please be on the lookout for your child's progress report on Friday. Additionally, we are celebrating Patriot Day this Friday and I hope that you will send your child to school wearing red, white and / or blue this Friday! As always, thanks for your support of our students and our school.
Best,
Dr. McMillan
Visitation Policy for the 2021-2022 School Year
Please see the important announcement below from DCSD regarding the 2021-2022 Visitor/Volunteer Protocol:
Out of an abundance of caution and due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, we will continue the visitor protocol that was in place for the 2020-2021 school year.
Visitors and volunteers will not be permitted in buildings until further notice. We will continue to monitor conditions and data provided by the Department of Public Health(DPH), the DeKalb County Board of Health (DBOH), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). It is our sincere hope that conditions will improve, and we will be able to reopen our doors and benefit from the value that our committed volunteers add to our schools and centers.
We appreciate each of our volunteers and community partners. In the interim, we will look for and we invite you to help us identify opportunities for volunteers to support our school community virtually.
This information is new guidance we are just receiving and we are trying to share ahead so that stakeholders can plan accordingly. DCSD will share more updates and clarification soon. In addition, we will be working to determine how we can find creative ways to involve our parents at school in outdoor situations and other approved scenarios.
ACTION REQUIRED FOR YOUR STUDENT TO RECEIVE A DEVICE
Please note that face masks are required in all school buildings!
Reminders for Morning Arrival / Drop off
Please be kind to the carpool volunteers who are charged with keeping all children safe. Follow all traffic laws and other directives by our staff in an effort to keep our students safe.
● Be patient. You may arrive for drop-off as early as 7:15 a.m. We will have teachers on duty at 7:15 a.m. to unload cars.
● Please do NOT get out of your car while in the carpool lane. A staff member will come to your car to open the door for your child.
● Be prepared to have your child to exit the car quickly. Backpacks and school items should be in the car with your child. It takes a bit of time to get these items out of the trunk or rear hatch.
● Be safe. Please watch for pedestrians, especially our staff on duty! We are moving people and cars in “chunks” so there are fewer interruptions in the flow of cars and the flow of walkers.
● Consider riding the bus. We have staff available to receive bus riders at 7:00 a.m., so please have your child ride the bus. We start school at 7:45 a.m. and this is a good way to ensure they are on time.
Thank you for helping us to keep our children safe!
Donations Needed
Please consider donating small bottles of water to the Health and PE department. The small bottles of water will be provided to students that forget to bring a water bottle for the day. We are asking for donations of 8 ounce water bottles. Thanks!
Congratulations!!!

Health Check
To help us keep our students and staff healthy, we are asking for ALL JOHN LEWIS ELEMENTARY FAMILIES to conduct a morning temperature check prior to coming to school each and every morning. It only takes a few seconds, and it will help us to get ahead of any outbreaks at school. If your child is sick or not feeling well, please keep them at home!
