Leverty Letter
Dear Montclair Families,
As April is nearing I’m eager to see if March will go out like a lion, given that we had a pleasant beginning to the month (lamp start). Despite the weather our work at Montclair is proceeding at a lion’s pace, rapidly trying to prepare for our students to return. I wanted to provide some highlights of that planning, so your family can better prepare, and offer some suggestions.
Since it will have been essentially one full year since children have been inside the school building, it is normal for students to forget what it is like being a “student”. Obviously, for our kindergartners, the concept of what a student looks like and acts like is foriegn to them, except virtually. Hence, if might be wise to consider the following suggestions in order to prepare, mentally and physically, your child for a return to school transition.
- Note: K-2 start date is April 5th. Students may arrive at school at 8:45 AM, to begin instruction at 9:00 AM. Grades 3-5 start date is April 12th with same start time. Dismissal information will be coming your way, but essentially school dismisses at 11:15 AM.
- Schedules: If you haven’t already done so, begin by setting an alarm clock for your child, or a schedule posted on the refrigerator, that places demands on their time. Have them begin to get up at a specific time, have a bedtime set that allows them to get plenty of sleep, offer a “task” time in the middle of the day that asks them to do a task that wouldn’t be their normal go to task. These time related structures help kids ready themselves for the time oriented demands of the classroom.
- Masks: Have your child wear a mask for a longer period of time, so they are comfortable with this action. Mask wearing will be a mandatory part of returning to school, so trying this practice on before they return will help, like breaking in a new pair of hiking boots before you have to go for a long hike.
- Mindfulness: Talk to your child about this transition. For some students, especially our kindergartners, returning to school may be unsettling, might induce anxiety or cause concern. While children do experience these feelings they generally don’t know how to express these feelings, so it is our responsibility as adults to coach them through these scenarios.
- Health/Wellness: For many students who have spent the better part of the year in front of a computer screen, be sure to help kids get energized for this transition. Ride bicycles, walk or engage in some type of physical activity so that students are ready to “move”. While we’ll be sitting in classrooms the demands on students will be increased, moving from one place to another and attending to a busy schedule. Perhaps consider walking or biking to/from school each day. Send your child to school with a water bottle, as our water fountains will be turned off.
- Nutritional Support: Be sure to send your child off to school with a healthy breakfast in their stomach. See below for meal program information.
Additionally, be thinking about the following items as you prepare for the return to school transition. Consider, “What will be your child’s departure plan when school is over?” It is a good idea to let your teacher know in advance, so we can plan for a safe dismissal for all children. Unfortunately, we will not be serving meals at school, but every child will receive a free federally funded meal each day to take home. Children will take home one breakfast, lunch and supper entree each day at dismissal time. If you do not want your child to receive the free meals please use the Opt-Out Meal form below to let the school know.
Finally, below you see information about Vermont Hills day care, which will have limited spots at Montclair beginning on April 5th. These spots are for students that are enrolled in the hybrid portion of school only. Vermont Hills will be responsible for all communication and registration, so use the flyer below to reach out to them if in need.
I’m very excited about children returning to school and I know many of you share this enthusiasm. Don’t hesitate to reach out to either our building office staff, your teacher, or myself if you have any questions leading up to our return. We want this to be a seamless and stress free transition as possible. Know that we recognize there will be set backs as we smooth out our return to plan once we begin, and I appreciate your grace in helping us get this process right. Thank you!

March ~ Safe Routes to School Tips!
Spring’s Steps to Bicycle Safety!
With more people itching to get outside to walk and bike, it’s a good time to review the rules to ensure everyone’s safety. Be sure to review the best routes to use and if biking, check the bike’s condition before you head out. This short video, “ABC Quick Check” can help!
Here are a few steps to remember:
- •Always wear your helmet
- •Ride in the same direction as traffic, not against traffic.
- •Be visible. Wear a bright jacket or add reflective material or blinking lights to increase visibility.
- •Stay alert and ride predictably, in a straight line.
- •If riding on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk, ride at walking speed and be prepared to walk your bike when it gets busy or at the request of crossing guards. Be mindful of pedestrians and aware of traffic at all times.
- •Don’t assume that drivers see you –always watch for cars making turns or backing out of driveways. Learn bicycle safety skills in a class or ask Safe Routes to School to give a lesson at your school!

Avid for 6th Graders!
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system in all Beaverton middle and high schools and includes the AVID elective class during the school day. Your feeder middle school is looking for 35 students to be enrolled in the AVID elective class for next year.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective class, taken in addition to the academic core classes (humanities, math, science, and other required courses) at your middle school. It is based on writing as a tool for learning, the inquiry method, reading, organization, and collaborative grouping. Your feeder school’s AVID elective teacher is looking for 35 students to be enrolled next year.
AVID students selected for the AVID elective are...
- In the “academic middle” – meeting standards in all subject areas and passing standardized tests, but need a little extra support to do better
- Needing help with study skills and organizational skills
- Motivated to go to college but don’t quite know how or have resources at home
- Willing to work hard and study every night
- Historically underrepresented in 4-year universities (first one in the family to attend college, students coming from economically challenging situations, students of color, etc.)
- Facing special circumstances that make it difficult for them to actualize their college dream
Students must apply and interview to be in the AVID elective class. For more information, please see attached document. For application materials, contact Anne Duncan at first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us. For more information about the AVID elective class, contact your feeder middle school. Application is due March 19, 2021 and must be submitted online.
