Leverty Letter
Dear Montclair Families,
We have an exciting assembly coming out this week, which will showcase the many talents of our 4th graders. A great deal of fun video clips to watch – Mr. Bodeen being slimed and some teachers stepping (literally) up to the Tik Tok Challenge for the Kids Heart Challenge accomplishment. Finally, you’ll want to be sure to check out our Hawkeye Honorees this month. I’m so very proud of our students’ accomplishments and want to commend each Montclair student regardless of whether you are a Hawkeye Honoree. You rock Hawks!
Some other exciting news came out on Monday, April 19th regarding Oregon state academic testing (OSAS). Beaverton School district sent out an explanation of testing procedures this year, which is unlike other school years, and a link for parents to let us know if you want your child tested (grades 3rd-5th only). Please be sure to respond to the State Testing Confirmation survey and check out the FAQ for more information. Students do not need to take all of the tests this year, you can elect the test(s) of your choice. Transportation is provided (for those families outside of the one mile radius) if you reply with the survey form. There is no negative impact this school year if you elect to have your child sit out state testing.
Finally, I can’t tell you how rich and rewarding these past few weeks have been. I’m witnessing smiling students, listening in on author shares, physically seeing students’ writing go from a draft to a finished piece, actually reading with live students, taking part in classroom discussions and observing lessons where all students are present (CDL on the big screen and hybrid in seats). We’re not exactly back to normal, but these brief moments have provided a glimpse of what we’re all striving for – a return to a traditional school experiences.
Regards,
Sean Leverty
State Testing
Dear BSD Families,
Because of the pandemic, the Oregon Department of Education requested a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education that would have allowed school districts to skip state testing this spring. However, the federal government denied that request. Therefore, to maintain our federal funding, the Beaverton School District must offer testing to our students. Parents and guardians have the right to OPT OUT their students from testing.
Shortened versions of the following statewide tests will be offered:
- 3rd Grade: English Language Arts (ELA) & Mathematics
- 4th Grade: English Language Arts (ELA) & Mathematics
- 5th Grade: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics & Science
To maximize in-person instruction time for Hybrid students and to provide testing opportunities for Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) and FLEX Online School students, the district will provide testing opportunities on Wednesdays (asynchronous learning days only) in May and June. Students will take the tests at their current schools. Transportation will be provided for students who live one mile (elementary). (Note: if a school plans to test outside of the Wednesday windows, the school will communicate an alternate schedule directly with families.)
To help us schedule transportation and deliver a safe and successful testing experience for every student, we need to know by April 30 whether your student will or will not participate.

There is a need for parent/community volunteers to help with meal prep at all elementary schools. The volunteer shifts would be 1 – 2 hours in the morning to help with bagging up fruit, vegetables, or frozen entrees. Proposed hours are 8 – 10 am for early start schools or 9 – 11 am for regular start schools. Volunteers can be used every day of the week including Wednesdays. Elementary schools will coordinate for volunteers and front office staff can access a list of cleared volunteers through the district's volunteer management software Better Impact. Questions regarding Better Impact can be directed to Johanna Strout.
