Leverty Letter
Dear Montclair Families,
The sunshine has been a pleasant change in our weather patterns. I think I speak for everyone in that I’m over the snow and ice storms for the season, and hopeful that more mild weather permeates our days. I wanted to take a moment and update families to a staffing change. I know you’ll all join me in welcoming Mr. Szabolcs Sudy to Montclair as the long-term PE substitute. Mr. Sudy will be with us until spring break and he is already eagerly getting to know students and providing engaging lessons. He has experience as a PE teacher and he has spent year coaching soccer camp for the Portland Timbers. Thank you, Szabi for helping our Montclair students out!
Be mindful that our community will be receiving some very important Return To School communications in the coming days. This information will be important as you plan for your April 5th (K-2) and April 12th (3-5) return dates. Once these BSD communications come out, if you have any questions know that I’m always available to field your questions.
Finally, as we prepare for Return To School, we are also preparing for our next school year. If you know of any family that lives in your neighborhood and has a young child ready to enter kindergarten, please let the family know that Montclair is accepting enrollment for the 2021-22 school year. Many times, word of mouth is the only way we reach out new families that have no existing connection to Montclair.
Enjoy your day,
Sean Leverty

Avid for 6th Graders!
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system in all Beaverton middle and high schools and includes the AVID elective class during the school day. Your feeder middle school is looking for 35 students to be enrolled in the AVID elective class for next year.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective class, taken in addition to the academic core classes (humanities, math, science, and other required courses) at your middle school. It is based on writing as a tool for learning, the inquiry method, reading, organization, and collaborative grouping. Your feeder school’s AVID elective teacher is looking for 35 students to be enrolled next year.
AVID students selected for the AVID elective are...
- In the “academic middle” – meeting standards in all subject areas and passing standardized tests, but need a little extra support to do better
- Needing help with study skills and organizational skills
- Motivated to go to college but don’t quite know how or have resources at home
- Willing to work hard and study every night
- Historically underrepresented in 4-year universities (first one in the family to attend college, students coming from economically challenging situations, students of color, etc.)
- Facing special circumstances that make it difficult for them to actualize their college dream
Students must apply and interview to be in the AVID elective class. For more information, please see attached document. For application materials, contact Anne Duncan at first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us. For more information about the AVID elective class, contact your feeder middle school. Application is due March 19, 2021 and must be submitted online.
