PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We welcome you to the start of our 2021-2022 school year! We are just days away from welcoming all of our students back into our building after what seems like such a long time. We have chosen the theme “Bringing Back the Magic” for this year. Once your students cross the threshold of our building, magic will have returned into our school once again, filling the classrooms again with the sounds of teaching and learning. We cannot wait!
We know after last year, and with our current pandemic still in force, you may have some questions about plans for the Bonny Slope students. This email is designed to hopefully answer some of those questions. Below is information we have at this moment, but as you know from last year things can change hourly. We will keep you up to date with the most recent information.
Just as a reminder, you will receive a welcome email from your student's teacher at 4pm tomorrow when class lists are finalized.
Breakfast:
Free breakfast is available to all students. A survey is being sent out so that we can prepare for the number of students getting a breakfast and eating in the cafeteria and the number of students picking up a breakfast to be used as a snack later in the day. Students may eat breakfast in the cafeteria between 8:15-8:30. We are asking parents for this information to determine how much space is needed for students eating breakfast during pandemic times. The breakfast will be a “grab and go” breakfast and will be picked up in the cafeteria.
Survey: 2021 School Meal Survey
Lunch:
A free lunch is available to all students. Weather permitting, we will eat our lunches outside on the field. Every student is being asked to bring a towel and a plastic grocery bag labeled with the student’s name on them. Students will sit on the towel on the field or blacktop near the field for lunch. This year recess will be after lunch to accommodate handwashing needed for lunchtime. Recess will also be 25 minutes instead of 20 minutes to accommodate the sanitizing tables in the cafeteria.
Recess:
Recommendations for our students are changing daily. Most recently, students are being asked to wear a mask outside and to stay 6 feet away from others during recess. You can help us by teaching your child what it looks like to stay 6 ft away when playing outside. We are striving for 6ft but know that this can be difficult to do at all times, especially when playing outside together. Teachers will also teach students the social distancing rules for recesses.
5 Days a Week:
Students will go to school five days a week. Our day begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:05. Please make sure your child arrives on time and knows their going home plans.
Kindergarten Schedule:
September 8th is the first day of school for all students except for kindergartners. On Wednesday, September 8th and Thursday, September 9th, Kindergarten students will come to school for one hour student connections. On Friday, September 10th, students with last names beginning with the letters A-L, will attend class all day. On Monday, September 13th, students with the last names beginning M-Z will attend school all day. Tuesday, September 14th will be the first day all kindergarteners will spend in class all day together.
Specials:
Students will participate in four “specials” throughout the week. One day, students will participate in PE and music. The next day, students will go to the library and technology class. Library and technology have been reduced in time because of a reduction in the number of specials teachers at Bonny Slope (we no longer have another specialist to be in the rotation schedule as we have had in the past).
Meet Your Teacher Night:
Families may arrive anytime between 4:00-5:30 PM to meet the teachers. Below is a map of where the teachers will be standing outside. Teachers will mark where families need to stand for social distancing purposes and talk with the teacher for approximately 2-3 minutes. Additionally, parents may be asked to share going home plans during this time. A suggested timeline to keep families from being in a crowd or standing in a long line is: Last names that begin with: A-H 4:00-4:30, I-Q 4:30-5:00 and R-Z 5:00-5:30. Of course, if you cannot make the suggested time, we welcome you anytime! From 4:30-6:30 PM, families are welcome to go to the field and bring their own picnic. With both of these events, we ask that you keep 6 feet social distancing with everyone, students and adults as well as wear a mask at all times except when eating and drinking.
Medications at School:
If your student will need daily or emergency medications while at school, please bring them in their original containers with prescription information to the front of the school during Meet the Teacher Night. We will have you fill out a medication form (or you can print the one attached and fill it out before you arrive).
First Day of School:
Parents will not be allowed to walk their children to class as they have been able to in the past. Parents may walk their child to the assigned grade-level door and say a quick good-bye. This door is the one nearest the teachers at Meet Your Teacher Night. (See map). Please make sure your child knows their going home plans before they leave for school.
Dismissal:
Dismissal is a busy time. There are five options for students:
- Walk/Bike ride home
- Ride the school bus home: Teachers will deliver bus riders as they exit the building.
- Student Stop: Students will be released to the cafeteria.
- Parent pick up 3:05-3:20: If a parent wants to pick up a student at 3:05 dismissal, the parent may enter the parking lot, park in a marked parking space (no curb parking), and pick up student(s) in the marked areas by the bike racks. Please be sure to be parked before 3:00pm.
- Parent pick up curbside 3:20-3:30pm: If a parent would prefer to pick up a student without getting out of the car, the parent will enter the bus lane at 3:20 (after the buses leave). Students will enter cars at the bus lane. (These students will follow their teacher to the under at dismissal time. They will then line up for curbside pickup and be escorted by staff to the bus pick up lane at 3:20). Please place your students First and Last name on your dashboard to speed up the pick up process.
Please check out our Welcome video that shows our Back to School Procedures this year.

We are looking forward to a great year! And hope to see you at Meet the Teacher Night.

Arrival - 8:20-8:30 AM
For the safety of our students, please make sure students do not arrive before 8:20 this year. You will notice this is a change from previous practice of 8:15. We will be working diligently to make sure students are not congregating in close quarters while going to class. At this time, we are asking students to enter through the assigned grade-level doors. If your student is getting breakfast in the cafeteria they should enter the Main Entrance to the school. Additionally, another change in practice at this time will be to have students go directly to class between the times of 8:20 and 8:30. We are asking parents that can have their students walk to school rather than dropping them off in their car, to do so to keep the drop-off lane moving quickly. If you cannot drop off your child quickly and using the passenger side for your child to get out of the car, we ask that you find a parking space and walk your child to the school.

Dismissal - Begins at 3:05 PM
Dismissal: This year we are asking parents to NOT pick up their students early for the safety of their students. As you can imagine, releasing 660 students while social distancing is quite the feat. Disruption to the normal dismissal process which can start before 3:05pm causes confusion and keeps us from focusing on student safety.
