STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A quiet start to the week before Christmas will segue into some wintry weather for those procrastinators looking to sneak in some last-minute shopping before Santa’s sleigh touches down on Staten Island.

“I would suggest that if people have time off on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, that would be the best time to shop,” AccuWeather Senior Metereologist Paul Patelok said. “The weather looks pretty good. It’s on the chilly side, but still not too bad for December.”

Next Thursday and Friday, there’s a potential for merging systems to converge into a larger system on the East Coast, which is expected to bring rain and a “wintry mix” to the Island and surrounding New York City area.

“It’s still seven days away, the pieces aren’t even on the map yet,” Patelok went on to say. “But, it all looks like there’s going to be a potential big system with wind and a variety of weather, including rain, ice and snow for the region. So, the likelihood of traveling disruptions could start to occur late Thursday into Friday.”

As for those wondering if the borough is bound for a white Christmas, temperatures are definitely going to be cold and windy come Saturday.

“It’s going to be quite blustery on Christmas Eve,” Patelok said. “If people are heading out to church or traveling to visit family, you’re going to feel the car shake a little bit.”

Temperatures are expected to be colder than usual, dipping down to approximately 20 degrees. Winds are also expected to make things feel like they’re in the single digits or below zero during the nighttime hours. There also may be a few flurries and colder temperatures will keep any potential snowfall stuck firmly to those Christmas decorations.

“We believe that there should be no snow issues, at least in the New York City, tri-state area heading into Christmas,” Patelok said. “But you never know if things may change over, and we could possibly see some snow on the ground come Christmas Day.”
