STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The 2021 death of a 2-year-old girl with ties to Staten Island has been ruled a homicide, according to a spokesman with the office of the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

The child, identified by police as Mariya Huebler, was found unconscious and unresponsive just before 11:45 p.m. on June 7, 2021, at the Help U.S.A. Hamilton Place shelter in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan, according to a story in the New York Post.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the child lived for a time in St. George on Staten Island and still has family who reside on the Island.

Huebler was taken to Mount Sinai Saint Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No obvious signs of trauma were found at the time.

Police confirmed Friday that the case has now been ruled a homicide, with a report from the city medical examiner’s office revealing that the child consumed a quantity of methadone.

An investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made as of Friday, police said.
