Tens of thousands in Pa. without power due to Ida

With the remnants of Hurricane Ida producing torrential rains and strong winds, tens of thousands of residents across Pennsylvania are without power Wednesday night.

Shortly after 7 p.m., about 46,000 PPL Electric Utilities customers in the Keystone State were without power, according to the company’s website.

Many of those customers are in central Pennsylvania. Nearly 4,600 Dauphin County customers are without electricity, along with about 2,800 customers in Perry County and 1,500 homes in Cumberland County. Nearly 3,000 in Lancaster County are without service.

FirstEnergy Corp., which operates Met-Ed and West Penn Power, reports nearly 21,000 customers are without power. More than 4,600 Met-Ed customers in York County have no service, along with about 1,700 in Lebanon County and hundreds more in Dauphin and Cumberland counties.

PECO, which services the Philadelphia area, reports more than 36,000 customers are without service.

Some areas of central Pennsylvania have seen several inches of rain. The National Weather Service at State College reported 5.6 inches of rain at Harrisburg International Airport. Some areas have seen tornado watches and warning and strong winds.

State officials said they expected to see power outages due to the potent winds and the heavily saturated ground making it easier for trees to fall.
