The story of a 1966 riot in San Francisco, in which transgender prostitutes fought back against police harassment in the first known instance of queer resistance to social oppression in the U.S.. The riot at Compton's Cafeteria took place three years before the more famous rioting at the Stonewall Inn in New York, which is popularly believed to have launched the LGBT rights movement.
