Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or proof of a negative COVID test will be required to attend Portland Pilots sporting events beginning next week, the Pilots announced Tuesday.
The new policy goes into effect for UP’s men’s soccer match next Monday against UC San Diego at Merlo Field. All fans over 12 will have to show either proof of vaccination or of a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the event. Fans can show either a CDC-issued vaccination card or a photo of the card at the venue entrances.
“As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to increase in our state, it is important that we proactively employ public health measures to keep our fans, staff and student-athletes safe,” UP vice president for athletics Scott Leykam said in a statement. “We’re excited for our student-athletes to have the ability to compete in front of spectators again, and are going to do everything in our power to make sure that continues to happen.”
UP students, faculty and staff can show their valid university ID as proof of compliance with the university’s campus vaccination policy, the Pilots said.
Fans 5 and older also will be required to wear masks at both indoor and outdoor athletic events, as required by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s mandate, except while eating or drinking.
The Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers have adopted similar policies to attend sporting events at their home venues.
