A Saturday night chase involving a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy and a suspect ended with a shooting and the suspect and a police officer both being injured, according to authorities.

A suspect and a police officer were injured Saturday evening following a vehicle pursuit and shooting, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. Though many details remain unclear, the sheriff’s office posted on Twitter that at 6:46 p.m. the pursuit concluded in Oregon City at the I-205 North onramp from Highway 213.

Oregon City police deployed spike strips to stop the fleeing vehicle.

An “officer-involved shooting” happened at the end of the pursuit, the Twitter post said. The suspect, Gerald Leroy Barnes II, shot at police multiple times, according to a Clackamas County press release. Deputies returned fire.

Barnes sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital into police custody soon after he was admitted. He is being held at the Clackamas County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon and attempt to elude.

An Oregon City Police officer also also sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries at the scene, according to a press release from Clackamas County. The officer needed surgery but was released Sunday morning from the hospital. The cause of the injury is under investigation.

“During the incident one of our officers sustained a serious but non life-threatening injury,” the tweet said. “He is being treated at an area hospital. We will release more details when available.”

The sheriff’s office has not yet provided details about what prompted the shooting, reasons for the police chase, or the name of the officers that returned fire.

The investigation is being led by the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office and the Major Crimes Team.

Highway 213 was closed in both directions from I-205 to Redland Road for several hours during Saturday night’s investigation.
