The team of journalists who produced the landmark series “Ghosts of Highway 20” won the National Journalism Impact Award from the National Women’s Coalition Against Violence and Exploitation.

The recognition for the 2018 five-part series goes to reporter Noelle Crombie, videographer Dave Killen and photojournalist Beth Nakamura. The team spent months investigating the previously unknown history of violence against women perpetrated by killer John Arthur Ackroyd. The team from the beginning kept the focus on Ackroyd’s victims and their surviving loved ones.

“The media play a vital role in helping to give survivors a voice and to ensure resources are accessible for communities to help survivors. We applaud the work by The Oregonian,” said Michelle Bart, president, NWCAVE.

The Oregonian/OregonLive’s John Canzano also won the award in 2016, for his story on Brenda Tracy, the survivor of a gang rape.

This year’s award will be presented March 8 at the No More Summit, an anti-violence conference, in Vancouver, Washington.

“We are proud of the team’s work, telling the untold story of the victims and survivors of a serial killer. This is accountability journalism at its finest,” said Therese Bottomly, editor of The Oregonian/OregonLive.
