The Oregon Health Authority on Friday reported 3,207 coronavirus cases and 20 deaths, with 13 more hospitalizations since Thursday.

Oregon Health & Science University announced Friday morning their intent to expand intensive care unit capacity amid a hospital surge this week that is predicted to keep growing.

Across the state, hospitals were similarly expanding beds capacity and pleading for more health care workers to staff those beds.

The state announced Wednesday it had contracted with two private firms to provide up to 560 out-of-state nurses and other medical professionals to areas with hospitals overrun by COVID-19 patients.

Starting Friday, masks are mandatory in all indoor spaces and many outdoor spaces to combat the rise in cases.

If an increase in hospitalizations continue, hospitals will be overwhelmed even with that extra support, said Jackie DeSilva, emergency preparedness manager at health care nonprofit Asante, which runs Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass and Ashland Community Hospital.

Of the 20 deaths reported on Friday, six were in Jackson County where the Asante hospitals operate.

There are 1,098 hospitalized patients in Oregon Friday, which is 13 more than yesterday. There are 308 COVID-19 patients in intensive care beds, which is nine more than yesterday.
