Jets might ‘seriously consider’ trading for MVP quarterback, and no, it’s not Packers’ Aaron Rodgers

With the New York Jets in the market for a new quarterback this offseason, lots of speculation has focused on Aaron Rodgers.

But what if the Jets don’t end up uniting with the Green Bay Packers veteran? NFL insider Peter King discussed the upcoming options on the Rich Eisen Show:

“Well, we all think and I think you think that the number one step would be Aaron Rodgers. If that doesn’t work, could the number two step be Lamar Jackson ... I think they will go after Rogers, if he does play, and if they don’t get him, I think they will at least put their sniffers out and seriously consider Lamar Jackson.”

Rodgers hasn’t confirmed if he would be returning to football in 2023, and if he did, whether he would stay with the Packers. Sunday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Jets have inquired with the Packers about the four-time NFL MVP’s availability. Rodgers-Jets rumors heated up after New York hired former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator. Hackett was Rodgers’ coordinator in Green Bay from 2019-21.

The Baltimore Ravens are expected to use the franchise tag on Jackson but may move him if they can secure quality draft-pick compensation. That would be a scenario in which the Jets could try to go for Jackson, King says.

Another potential veteran option for the Jets could be Derek Carr, who was released Tuesday by the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Jets also have been linked to 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who’s set to leave San Francisco as a free agent. However SNY’s Connor Hughes has a dark-horse candidate for the Jets: Ryan Tannehill.

Don’t sleep on Tannehill. There’s a feeling around the NFL that the Jets are much higher on him than some want to believe.

The 34-year-old Tannehill has spent the last four seasons with the Tennessee Titans and was Pro Bowl selection in 2019. Yahoo Sports reports “Tannehill’s still under contract in Tennessee. But the Titans future is in flux with an aging offensive core coming off a season that ended with a seven-game losing streak.”

According to Over The Cap, Tannehill has a cap hit of $36.6 million in 2023.
