Eagles QB report card: Jalen Hurts, Joe Flacco, Nick Mullens focus on red zone, throwing in tight spaces

PHILADELPHIA -- Bucket hats and shorts. No, it was not a day at the Jersey Shore, let alone a backyard barbecue. It was Day 7 of Eagles training camp.

Offensive veteran players such as right tackle Lane Johnson, center Jason Kelce and tight end Zach Ertz looked on from the sidelines, allowing some of the younger players to get extra reps and more chances to impress the Eagles coaching staff and front office.

The theme for Wednesday’s practice was windows. At one point, the quarterbacks were working on maneuvering inside the pocket and throwing into a net 10 yards down the field, avoiding “dummies” fitted with raised hands. Not too far away, the wide receivers were practicing catching the ball between two “dummies” that were close together.

Unlike the last few practices, there was a lot of focus on the run game in the 11-on-11 sessions, but the quarterbacks did have chances to throw routes to receivers.

Here is the Day 7 report card for the three quarterbacks on the Eagles’ roster:

Jalen Hurts

Accuracy

Hurts had one of his better days accuracy-wise, unofficially completing seven of his 11 passes in live-action. Unlike Tuesday, when he started the session off slow, Hurts looked good at the start of the individual drills, especially when the quarterbacks were practicing throwing on the run. He also looked accurate during the first 11-on-11 session.

However, there was one big blemish on Tuesday’s performance. Hurts was attempting a pass over the middle of the field to wide receiver Jalen Reagor when his pass was picked off by linebacker JaCoby Stevens. It looked as if Hurts might not have seen Stevens in the middle of the field based on the ball’s trajectory during his second 11-on-11 session. Head coach Nick Sirianni came over to speak with him after the session was over.

Decision-Making

Aside from the interception, Hurts made some good decisions, even checking down to the running backs when he did not have anything open downfield.

Favorite Target

Tight end Dallas Goedert and wide receiver Greg Ward share the distinction of being the most targeted receivers for the day, with both seeing three passes thrown their way.

Play of the Day

Hurts threw a nice fade pass down the sideline to wide receiver John Hightower. Hurts laid the ball over Hightower’s shoulder, and the receiver made a leaping grab over cornerback Zech McPhearson. The ball was placed in an area where either Hightower was going to catch it, or it was going to fall out of bounds.

Overall Grade

Hurts had a good practice overall and did well with his red-zone throws and fit the ball into some tough areas for completions.

Joe Flacco

Accuracy

Flacco also threw the ball well during the individual throwing sessions. When it came to seven-on-seven and 11-on-11, Flacco threw seven passes during the live practice sessions, completing four of them. Flacco missed low and away on a quick out to running back Jordan Howard, and he missed on a throw to the corner targeted for tight end Tyree Jackson. Cornerback Michael Jacquet was flagged on the play for holding. Flacco also threw a pass that wound up at the feet of running back Kerryon Johnson.

Decision-Making

Flacco pulled the ball down when nothing materialized down the field. Flacco continued to take what the defense was giving him and spread the ball around the field.

Favorite Target

Flacco targeted running back Kenny Gainwell twice and completed both passes.

Play of the Day

Flacco threw a short touchdown to wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, which went for a touchdown when the team worked on the red-zone seven-on-seven drill. Arcega-Whiteside got good positioning running an inside route on the defender, and Flacco threw an accurate pass.

Overall Grade

There looked to be something off with the quarterback-center exchange during the first 11-on-11 session, with two of the snaps Flacco took from center Harry Crider winding up on the ground. The offense continued to work on running the ball a lot. Not the sharpest day for the veteran quarterback, but he also did not throw the ball a lot.

Grade: B-

Nick Mullens

Accuracy

Mullens threw well during the individual drills, throwing the ball well on the run. Mullens threw the ball four times during the competitive seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 periods, completing three of the attempts. Mullens threw a nice ball to a tightly-covered tight end Tyree Jackson, who again was working on a corner route in the end zone. However, Jackson could not bring in the one-handed catch.

Decision-Making

Mullens did not throw any questionable passes and went through his progressions, scanning the field for open receivers.

Favorite Target

Having in only four passes during a practice is tough, but he threw to four different receivers: Gainwell, Jackson, running back Jason Huntley, and tight end Jack Stoll.

Play of the Day

In the seven-on-seven red-zone session, Mullens rolled to his left and could not find anyone open. Mullens waited until Huntley moved to an open space in the back of the end zone. Mullens threw the ball between Huntley’s numbers for the touchdown. Defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson was lobbying for a sack call because the play took six seconds.

Overall Grade

In limited work, Mullens did a good job. He also did not fumble the ball and made the most of his opportunities, albeit it was only four throws.

Grade: B+
