Title: Human-Robotic Collaboration: The future is (nearly) here

Abstract
The foundation of human-robotic collaboration is on solid footing and nearly here. In this talk, we will discuss three on-going projects in The77Lab (MIT-Mechanical Engineering) related to developing simple tools to augment humans, to digital transformation (training novice operators), to rehabilitation robotics (delivering movement therapy and evaluating outcomes). A key aspect to highlight among these examples is the dynamic nature of human-robotic collaboration. Many of us design(ed) fabulous machines and expect(ed) humans to get entrained into their use, whilst others attempt(ed) to have robots understand human intentions and entrained them to humans. Both of these visions are very useful but somehow “static.” It might be better to focus on “dynamic” change: as humans learn how to use robots, robots should adapt their behavior, which will lead to further human adaptation and so on. Another aspect to consider when examining human-robot collaboration is that “moonshots,” as for example fully autonomous vehicles operating in complex variable environments, are exciting but alternative approaches that include the human-in-loop might be achievable in short order and significantly impact the march of progress. Fundamental to human-robotic collaboration is the expertise into fusing computer vision with haptic feedback, so that robots can then properly and truly interact and manipulate the world..

Title: Rehabilitation Robotics: Improving Everyday Human Functions

Abstract
Neural disorders, old age, and traumatic injuries limit the ability of humans to perform activities of daily living. Robotics can be used to characterize and retrain human neuromuscular responses. Columbia University Robotics and Rehabilitation (ROAR) Laboratory designs innovative robots and performs scientific studies to improve everyday human functions such as standing, walking, stairclimbing, reaching, head turning, and others. Human experiments have targeted individuals with stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and elderly subjects with various disorders. The talk will provide an overview of some of these robotic technologies and scientific studies performed with them to show the potential of rehabilitation robotics to improve quality of life of people around the world.

Title: Towards Ultrasound Imaging based Closed-loop Control of Neurorehabilitation

Abstract
Wearable robots and neuroprosthetic devices are potential technologies for the neurorehabilitation of people affected by spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc. The main philosophy in assistive devices is to design human-in-the-loop control strategies that mimic neurophysiological learning principles. Traditional sensors, such as kinematic sensors, though sufficient to achieve desired kinematic outcomes in closed-loop control, miss out on changes in the human muscle caused by various factors, such as induced fatigue or neural excitation, and cannot thus truly enforce human-in-the-loop control. We have been exploring ultrasound-derived signals as indicators of muscle contractility changes in the closed-loop control of assistive devices and designing new human user-focused control strategies accordingly. In this talk, I will show our recent results on exoskeleton assistance based on ultrasound-derived muscle strain signals during walking with a robotic exoskeleton. We assert that due to ultrasound imaging's capability to directly and non-invasively visualize the muscle, closed-loop control that leverages this capability will be more effective in achieving intuitive and symbiotic human-in-the-loop control of assistive devices.
