Trial date set for 2 of 4 people accused in Flint Family Dollar security guard murder case

FLINT, MI—Two of the four people charged in connection with the May 2020 shooting death of a Flint Family Dollar store security guard after an argument over face mask requirements are scheduled to stand trial.

Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop, both of Flint, are slated to appear before Genesee Circuit Court Judge Brian Pickell on March 23 for trial in connection with the shooting death of Calvin Munerlyn.

Teague and Bishop are both charged with first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearms. Bishop, Teague’s son whom prosecutors believe pulled the trigger during the fatal shooting, is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

If convicted on the first-degree murder charges, both Teague and Bishop could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A third person accused in the case, Larry Teague’s wife and Ramonyea Bishop’s mother, Sharmel Teague of Flint, also faces first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearms charges. She is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday, Feb. 28, for a pre-trial hearing.

Genesee County online court records do not currently show any future court appearances scheduled for Brya Bishop, the fourth person charged in the case and Sharmel Teague’s daughter.

She is charged with tampering with evidence, lying to police investigating a violent crime, and accessory after the fact to a felony.

All four have remained in the Genesee County Jail since being taken into custody nearly two years ago.

Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop were charged following the May 2020 murder of Munerlyn, a 43-year-old security guard at the Family Dollar store, located at 877 Fifth Ave., in Flint.

Munerlyn was shot and killed following a dispute over a customer not wearing a mask into the store, police previously said. He died shortly after at Hurley Medical Center.

Police initially said men were seen running from the scene of the shooting, toward high-rise apartments behind the store.

Larry Teague was arrested on May 7, 2020, near the Studio Six Hotel in West Houston, Texas. Ramonyea Bishop was found May 8, 2020, in a three-unit house in Bay City. He was taken into custody without incident

Details of the shooting were released during an August 2020 preliminary examination.

A cashier at the store testified that Sharmel Teague had argued with Munerlyn after she and Brya Bishop were told they needed to wear face masks inside the store.

The argument continued outside the store, and Teague told officers she was punched by Munerlyn because she’d spit on him, according to testimony. A search of Teague’s phone showed she made phone calls to Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop about 20 minutes prior to the shooting.

The mother and daughter drove to Atherton Road, where they picked up Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop, according to prior testimony. From there, Ramonyea Bishop was dropped off at a nearby Rally’s restaurant, while Larry Teague was dropped off at the high-rise apartments behind the Family Dollar.

Police previously testified that Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop entered the store at separate times, according to surveillance video that captured the shooting.

While Munerlyn and Larry Teague argued at the front of the store, Ramonyea Bishop pointed a gun to the back of the security guard’s head and pulled the trigger, according to testimony from another store employee.

All four suspects were bound over for trial following the August 2020 preliminary examination.

The cases were remanded back to Genesee District Court in June 2021 for new testimony. However, no new testimony was given before all four were again bound over to Genesee Circuit Court in December 2021.
