The sports version of the Transitive Law holds that if A beats B and B beats C, then A should beat C.
Well, that axiom got jumbled this week and could likely be sorted out at this weekend's Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas.
A week after Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) claimed the top spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 national high school volleyball rankings with a 3-2 win over then-No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), the Sea Hawks fell in straight sets to No. 10 Torrey Pines (San Diego). Meanwhile, the Monarchs were in Kentucky snapping the 68-match win streak of Assumption, the reigning MaxPreps National Champion.
Video: Top 25 national volleyball rankingsMater Dei jumps back to No. 1 after snapping Assumption's 68-match win streak.
And then Padau Franciscan (Parma, Ohio) comes along and bests both Mater Dei and Assumption to win the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament and jump into the rankings at No. 8.
Things should sort themselves out after this weekend at Durango as nearly 20 of our Top 50 teams are headed to the Las Vegas event, including Mater Dei, Assumption, Redondo Union, Marymount (Los Angeles) and Xavier College Prep (Phoenix).
New to the rankings this week are the Bruins of Padua Franciscan, Papillion-La Vista (Papillion, Neb.), Christian (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Alpharetta (Ga.)
