Wordle: What was the hardest word for the first week of August?

Wordle

Wordle can only be played once a day.

August did not start off on an easy note for Wordle players.

According to the New York Times on Twitter, COYLY was the past week’s hardest Wordle answer. The word was released as a new puzzle on Tuesday, August 2.

The object of the online word game is to guess a secret five-letter word in six tries or less. If any of the letters in a guess appear highlighted in green, it means that letter is in the right place in the correct answer. A letter highlighted in yellow means that letter is in the correct answer, but it’s in the wrong space. Letters highlighted in gray aren’t in the puzzle answer.

The Times also revealed that the average guesses it took for players to guess the word were 4.93 — very close to the maximum of six guesses players have before their game is over. Only 7.84% of total Wordle players were able to solve the word in three guesses or fewer.

According to Forbes, the Twitter Comms team pulled together an exclusive insight into the five most difficult Wordle puzzles in July, basing findings on the number of times the “Wordle X/6″ phrase was shared with followers. The five hardest Wordle answers for the month of July were proved to be “NIGHT,” “CINCH,” “ELOPE,” “ANGRY,” and “TRITE.”

To combat the difficulty of some of the recent Wordles, the WordleBot, created by the New York Times, has concluded the most optimal starting word for the popular puzzle game.

The bot has confirmed “CRANE” to be the best word to start.

The New York Times said “WordleBot solves the 2,309 possible Wordle’s using the fewest numbers of guesses when it starts with ‘CRANE’ in normal mode,” MassLive previously reported.

Wordle releases a new word of the day every day. Players must wait until midnight for a new word of the day and can only play once a day.
