Interestingly, Massachusetts retail sports betting has been live in the state since of Jan. 31, 2023. Better yet, Massachusetts mobile sports betting launched on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET, which means legal sportsbook apps are open for mobile-betting business.

Now, it’s that glorious time to dig into the latest Massachusetts sports betting launch details and present the best MA sportsbook promo codes, one of which is the amazing DraftKings Massachusetts promo code that awards a $150 sportsbook bonus.

When did Massachusetts sports betting launch?

As previously mentioned, Massachusetts mobile sports betting launched on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 10 a.m. ET.

Technically speaking, Massachusetts sports betting was already legal, but those located in state boundaries didn’t have the capabilities to lay down a legal wager until recently. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission officially launched retail sports betting on Jan. 31, 2023, whereas legal mobile sports betting lagged a bit behind (March 10, 2023, just in time for March Madness).

Both retail and mobile forms of legal sports betting work via online capabilities. The only difference is that, with retail sports betting, the online sports bettors must be located at the designated brick-and-mortar location.

Mobile sports betting, on the other hand, is the method by which sports gamblers can legally place wagers from the comfort of their home via a desktop or mobile device (anywhere in the state).

Massachusetts sportsbook app launch updates

What we do know is that retail sports betting is now live, as of Jan. 31, 2023, with the full scope of online sports betting dropping on March 10, 2023. Interestingly, sports betting in Massachusetts is already legal, but the state took some time to unveil the full capabilities that will allow sports bettors to get into the action.

Hey, what’s the old saying? The best things in life come to those who are willing to wait. Right?

As far as the Bay State is concerned, similar to a number of states throughout the country, Massachusetts began turning the wheels on legal sports betting in late 2018. In May of that year, the Supreme Court cleared the way by striking down a 1992 federal law that prevented commercial sports betting, giving the power to deliberate on the matter back to each individual state (PASPA).

A number of states moved quickly to begin the process of setting up parameters for legal sports betting, including a host of northeast locations. Massachusetts was among the states to then legalize commercial sports betting, with an official launch date yet to be decided.

In the meantime, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission deliberated on some of the specifics, including the process of license approvals. A number of different gaming entities were quick to file a notice of intent with the MGC to provide sports betting services in Massachusetts, so the appetite was apparent from the start.

States that have already launched legalized sports betting have certainly been successful to this point, with large sums of tax revenue raked in through the operation. New York, alone, had collected over $300 million since the start of 2022, when they launched legalized sports betting, a route that Massachusetts will certainly look to follow.

And now that Mass online sports betting is live, users in the Bay State have access to some of the most trusted names in the industry like FanDuel Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM Sportsbook, and more. Of course, the aforementioned DraftKings Sportsbook was founded and is currently headquartered out of Massachusetts, providing even more engagement with betting services in their home state.

Now that online betting has launched in Massachusetts, let’s go over how the Bay State has arrived at this moment, and what we can expect to see moving forward.

Bet types available

Once the Massachusetts sports gambler is ready to roll, with an account on the sportsbook platform (desktop or mobile app), deciding on what and how to bet is the next course of action.

Fortunately, Massachusetts online sports betting features a plethora of different betting types and options, as well as a wide variety of odds.

There are a number of different ways to bet on a specific game or match, including team as well as player-focused wagers:

  • Moneyline: Bet on a team or player you believe will win the game/matchup.
  • Point spread: Choose the number of points (plus or minus) that will separate the teams involved in the game/match. Users can also buy additional points to help their chances while reducing the odds. Most sportsbooks also allow bettors to wager on alternate point spreads, which improves the odds.
  • Over/under total: Bet on whether the total points scored in a specific game/match will reach over or under the pre-game determined line. Just like point spreads, users can buy points in either direction to improve their chances of winning the bet.
  • Prop bets: Specific to a team or player, prop bets typically don’t rely on the win/loss outcome of the game/match. Rather, prop bets are a game within the game. Bettors can wager on a specific player or team to score a touchdown, point, goal, etc. as well as which team will score next, just to name a few. Some of the most fun lines to play in all of sports wagering, prop bets are especially popular during major events like the Super Bowl or March Madness.
  • Teasers: Teasers allow bettors to play significantly altered lines from the normal points spreads, at a slightly reduced value.
  • Parlays: Some of the most popular wagers in sports betting, parlays allow users to combine multiple legs in one bet including different game, team, and player prop bets for multiplied odds.
  • Same-game parlays: Provided by select sportsbooks, same-game parlays allow bettors to combine various lines from the same game/match for even longer odds.
  • Live-betting: Live betting allows users to place wagers on games that are already in progress, as pregame lines will lock once the game/match is underway.
  • Futures: Bettors can place wagers on a player or team to win a bet that will be decided at a much later date.

Available sports to bet

The available sports that Massachusetts online sports gamblers can bet on, once the time comes, are pretty straightforward. It will all depend on the sportsbook the bettor is utilizing.

Each sportsbook, or sports betting app, offers a unique variety of sports available to bet on. Some of the standard sports and leagues that every sportsbook carries are the NFL (American football), NCAA football (College Football), NBA (basketball), MLB (baseball), NHL (ice hockey) and MLS (soccer).

Massachusetts legal sports betting history

While sports betting seems to be coming close to the surface in terms of a launch date, it has not been a completely smooth ride to get to this point. One of the major hang-ups throughout the legalization process in Massachusetts was the aspect of including college sports in the legal betting universe.

A handful of university presidents in Massachusetts were strongly opposed to the inclusion of college sports in legal betting, as they feared it compromised the well-being of student-athletes. Many collaborated and signed a letter sent to Senate President Karen Spilka as well as other legislators, expressing their concern for “unnecessary and unacceptable risks.”

After deliberation, the Massachusetts state representatives moved ahead with the inclusion of college sports, voting to legalize sports betting within state confines. However, there was a bit of a twist for college betting. Massachusetts online bettors are not eligible to wager on in-state Massachusetts college teams, except for during tournament play.

Once Governor Charlie Baker signed the bill into law on Aug. 10, 2022, the responsibility was then shifted to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to approve licenses, rules, and regulations for in-state betting to begin.

A large number of notable U.S. sportsbooks then filed notices of intent (with the MGC) to provide sports betting services in Massachusetts. The action officially got underway on Jan. 31, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET when retail sportsbooks went live. The online segment of Mass sports betting officially launched on March 10, 2023, bringing full sportsbook capabilities to the Bay State.

Potential Massachusetts tax revenue

Massachusetts sports betting revenue is expected to be as high as $6.985 million on an annual basis.

That number will be generated through a 20% tax rate on mobile sports betting, as well as a 15% tax rate on retail sports betting.

Massachusetts sportsbook retail locations and partnerships

Of course, when each state seeks legal sports betting, partnerships are key. Sportsbooks seek partnerships with land-based locations in order to get an early foot in the door via retail sports betting.

Having that retail partnership allows for mobile sports betting flexibility. And although Massachusetts has yet to launch, some of the key partnerships have already come into focus.

Massachusetts sports betting law allows up to 15 mobile sportsbooks (licenses), but eight of those must have connections to land-based partners.
