2024 Annual Conference: Chicago

Please join us in Chicago to celebrate the Midwest Art History Society’s Big 50! The 50th Annual MAHS Conference will take place on April 4–6, 2024. The Thursday and Friday sessions will be hosted by the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute. On Saturday, the conference sessions will move to the University of Chicago and there will be programming at the Frederick C. Robie House as well as at the Smart Museum of Art.

April 4, 9am-4pm - 1st Floor of the *SAIC MacLean Center

April 5, 9:30am-3:30pm - 1st Floor of the *SAIC MacLean Center

April 6, 10am-12pm - Cochrane Woods Art Center (University of Chicago)

*For security reasons, participants need to have a government-issued ID with them to access SAIC

During the morning sessions on April 4 and 5, coffee and pastries will be available outside the Nichols Trustee Suite in the AIC. All participants are welcome to these even if you are attending sessions at SAIC.

For presenters:

Those presenting papers should be sure to be in contact with their session chair regarding their slide decks as these presentations will need to be sent to chairs no later than the day before the session.

Art Institute of Chicago admission:

MAHS attendees are welcome to free general admission by presenting their conference badge at the admissions desks. Free admission includes access to the museum’s galleries and non-ticketed exhibitions. For special exhibitions that require an additional ticket, including Picasso: Drawing from Life, you will need to purchase a ticket ($5) and use the virtual line, which is first-come, first-served.

MAHS Keynote presenters, who will speak on April 4, are Jay Clarke, Rothman Family Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago (left), and Annie Bourneuf, Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (right). Join them for a conversation about the Art Institute’s special exhibition, Picasso: Drawing From Life, as they critically engage with the artist’s work in the contemporary moment.

The distinguished art museums of Chicago include the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Design Museum of Chicago, DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, Heritage Museum of Asian Art, and National Museum of Mexican Art, to name a few. Chicago’s leading universities also boast incredible collections: the Smart Museum of Art, The Renaissance Society, DePaul Art Museum, and the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA).
