Northwest Africa 15497 (NWA 15497)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Daoud Wabish in 2020 from a meteorite dealer in Northwest Africa.

Physical characteristics: Single fresh stone with shiny, black fusion crust with melt veins visible.

Petrography: (V. Mugica, CSUF; D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Specimen displays a predominantly subophitic texture comprised of subhedral, compositionally zoned, prismatic and equant pigeonite grains (avg. grain size = 0.38 mm; n=79). Maskelynite is tabular and prismatic (avg. grain size = 0.71 mm; n=54) unzoned and set within a fine-grained matrix that includes accessory chlorapatite, merrillite, titanomagnetite, troilite and silica glass. Melt pockets are sparsely distributed throughout the sample.

Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs59.0±15.1Wo17.4±3.4, range Fs32.2-83.9Wo10.9-24.9, Fe/Mn=35±4, n=95), High-Ca Pyroxene (Fs35.8±9.6Wo29.7±3.0, range Fs25.9-60.5Wo25.0-35.0, Fe/Mn=31±4, n=29), Maskelynite (An48.2±4.5Or2.7±1.6, range An40.8-54.1Or1.3-8.4, n=33).

Classification: Martian (shergottite).

Specimens: 2.42 grams at Cascadia, main mass with Daoud Wabish.
