Big congrats to the Beacon Biosignals ANML team (Analytics and Machine Learning… and yes, it’s pronounced “Animal”) for our second FDA 510(K) clearance. This one is for SleepStageML, our algorithm to automatically stage sleep from EEG signals in traditional polysomnography recordings. We're especially excited, as it's the first medical device in the sleep space to be FDA-cleared with a Predetermined Change Control Plan (#PCCP), which permits us to continuously improve our algorithm without resubmission to the FDA... faster innovations for patients! When I first considered joining Beacon last year, my very first diligence call was with an old friend and EEG neuroscientist unaffiliated with the company who told me that the Beacon team is the most talented in the field, and that Alexander Chan, who previously led Apple’s health tech algorithms and data science team, is especially brilliant… I’m proud to work closely with such a strong and mission-focused team driving innovation in both #neuroscience and #AI! Increasing patient access to life-changing therapies is critical for improving healthcare. We often think first about scientific innovation as the driver of democratized therapy access, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. Thanks to AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care and Julia Bonavitacola for covering alternative pricing models that could help address obesity in America. When Jean-Manuel Izaret (JMI) and I built the #NetflixModel for infectious diseases, a software-like license agreement enabling insurers to fund treatment for *every patient* not just the sickest ones, we were excited at the possibility of bringing it to other major indications like metabolic disease. Here, we talked with Julia and AJMC about some other creative ways to apply this model to obesity. In addition to pricing innovation, another crucial component of democratizing treatment access is *precision*. Identifying and developing the right drugs for the right patients at the right time is the promise of #PrecisionMedicine, and it's one of the reasons I recently joined Beacon Biosignals: to help discover, develop, and deploy much-needed treatments for #neuropsychiatric and #neurodegenerative disease, and even #GLP1s, using #EEG and #AI. After four incredible years at BrightInsight, I’m thrilled to share that I have joined Beacon Biosignals as Chief Business Officer. Beacon is enabling precision medicine for the brain. The team has spent the last five years building exceptional technology, including the 510(k)-cleared #Dreem device for at-home EEG measurement, AI algorithms for analyzing brain activity, and biomarkers that support the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease many years in advance of overt symptoms. Jacob Donoghue, MD PhD, Jarrett Revels, and the brilliant team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians have done a remarkable job already, and Beacon is just getting started… I have deep gratitude for the BrightInsight team, customers, strategic and channel partners, investors, and advisors. Transforming patient care through digital health solutions is not only a noble cause, but also a necessary one, given the incalculable opportunity that digital has to improve patient lives, and the tremendous challenges that patients face today throughout their care journeys. I’m proud of the many BrightInsight programs that have already helped many thousands of patients globally, and can’t wait to see the impact of several more crucial launches and expansions this year. There are far too many people to thank, but I’m especially grateful to everyone I worked with directly and hired personally - thank you. And special thanks to Kal Patel, M.D., MBA, both for his relentless leadership in making BrightInsight and digital health successful, and for his belief in me. On a personal note, when I was finishing my postdoc in neuroscience and AI more than a decade ago, I dreamed of a world where neuroscience had the same level of clinical precision that oncology therapeutics were unlocking through genetic testing. But at the time I didn’t see a viable market for the enabling technologies, or for the risk profile of the drug candidates. That’s changed now, particularly in the last few years of biopharma innovation and investment... and I couldn’t be more excited to partner in driving this innovation forward as part of the incredible Beacon team.
