A study at City of Hope | Antelope Valley found that telehealth can be leveraged to provide geriatric assessments and supportive care interventions to older adults in high-poverty, lower-resourced communities. Results from the study were presented by Tanyanika Phillips, M.D., during the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. Here, William Dale MD, PhD, FASCO, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Supportive Care Medicine at City of Hope and Director of the Center for Cancer and Aging, discusses the findings. #GeriOnc #SupportiveCare #ASCO24

City of Hope has been awarded $5.4 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to establish a leading-edge stem cell research laboratory on the Duarte, California campus. The new Stem Cell-Based Disease Modeling Laboratory will enhance our scientific capabilities in two significant ways: -Advancing Stem Cell-Based Disease Modeling: The lab will foster innovation in regenerative medicine, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in this exciting field. -Stimulating Research in Underserved Communities: By increasing access to specialized laboratory equipment, services and training, we aim to invigorate stem cell research and educate students about regenerative medicine in medically underserved areas. “Our new laboratory will expand access to state-of-the-art disease models to researchers at City of Hope and our neighboring institutions, enabling them to pursue impactful scientific questions and to accelerate innovation in stem cell therapies,” said program director Nadia Carlesso, Ph.D., City of Hope’s chair of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. “This will accelerate research in regenerative medicine, benefiting patients and researchers throughout California. We also aim to plant the seed for future careers in regenerative medicine by educating students about the field.” This grant to Dr. Carlesso’s team builds on the over $212 million that Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope has received from CIRM, underscoring the state-funded agency’s confidence in our leadership in stem cell-related therapies.
