CUNY Law Alum Hina Naveed ’21 is awarded the Aryeh Neier Fellowship.

The Aryeh Neier Fellowship is a joint venture between the Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). It was created to honor the legacy of Aryeh Neier.

Hina will work with both organizations on joint initiatives to strengthen respect for human rights in the United States. Her work is likely to include field research in the United States, the preparation of reports, advocacy, and the development of litigation strategies.

HRW is committed to defending human rights, and the ACLU protects guaranteed privileges, including equal protection under the law. Their missions and the work they have done align with Hina’s immigrant rights activism, her work as a registered nurse, and now her journey as a law graduate.

She is a Registered Nurse and a DACA-recipient who graduated from CUNY School of Law’s evening program earlier this year and recently took the bar exam.

While working full time as a Medical Director in a foster care agency and attending CUNY Law at night, Hina volunteered on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic as a NYC Medical Reserve Corps member.

Hina is a fervent advocate of immigrant rights and wants to work to correct systematic inequities in health care.

Currently, Hina is dedicating her time to get Cesar Vargas elected as the Staten Island Borough President, and is looking forward to starting at Human Rights Watch in the Fall as an Aryeh Neier Fellow.

“First and foremost, I am so humbled to have been selected for this prestigious fellowship with such esteemed organizations. I am most excited about working with some of the most accomplished and brilliant minds at both HRW and ACLU that are at the forefront of human rights advocacy. I’ve been an advocate in the community and have developed strong field skills. I’m looking forward to utilizing and building on them in the more expansive human rights context, and obtaining skills as a legal advocate.”
