Capitol Region Mental Health Center (CRMHC) is a community based mental health center which provides an array of innovative clinical and community support services to individuals with a psychiatric disability, in many cases with co-occurring problems of substance abuse. We also collaborate with the Greater Hartford DMHAS-Funded Mental Health Programs that is comprised of 15 non-profit agencies located in Hartford and West Hartford. These agencies work together to provide a comprehensive array of behavioral health services to nearly 3300 individuals and families. We serve adults with serious psychiatric disabilities or the co-occurring disorders of psychiatric illness and substance use, 18 years and older who reside in Hartford (Catchment Area 23), West Hartford, Farmington, Avon, Canton and Simsbury (Catchment Are 18). Our mission is to partner with persons in recovery to ensure access to high quality and culturally competent person-centered behavioral healthcare services.

We seek qualified individuals for the position of Custodian located at 500 Vine Street, Hartford, CT 05112.  This is a full time, 40-hour weekly position.  The work schedule is 1st shift, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The position number is 126000.

*The entry level compensation rate for this position shall be ten percent (10%) below the minimum compensation listed on this bulletin for an employee in his/her initial working test period. Upon completion of the initial working test period, the employee shall advance to the minimum (Step 1) of the salary schedule and be paid accordingly.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings); dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers; washes, dusts and polishes glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment; makes beds; checks, marks, stores and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area); collects and counts soiled laundry; distributes, empties and sterilizes glassware, wash basins and bedpans; sweeps walks; collects and disposes of trash; reports needs for repairs; performs minor maintenance; runs errands; inspects buildings for damage and reports conditions to supervisor; may change light bulbs and replace fuses; may lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.; may replace ceiling or floor tiles; may remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings; may sand and salt stairways and walkways; may move furniture and/or set-up classrooms; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; some ability in simple record keeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

  • Experience working as a Custodian in an inpatient/outpatient facility or comparable setting.
  • Experience working in a setting promoting cleanliness and sanitation to clients or patients.
  • Experience working in a health care setting.
  • Experience operating high speed floor machines used for stripping, waxing and burnishing.
  • Experience handling, mixing and applying chemicals used for disinfection.
  • Experience in infection prevention and the proper use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Experience with specific cleaning procedures in administrative offices, restrooms and break rooms.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
