The UROCKS (Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Cave and Karst Science) program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in independent mentored research projects. These projects will involve one or more aspects of Cave and Karst Science, along with professional development workshops, karst science seminars, and social events. The program is currently funded for three summers (2022-2024), and will host ten students each summer.

Eligibility
  • Per NSF regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, naturalized citizens, or permanent residents of the United States
  • Applicants must be rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate students at the start of the REU. (Eligible students may be enrolled as undergraduates at two or four-year institutions)
  • Applicants must be willing to commit for the entire 10 week residential summer program
  • Students from underrepresented groups and first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply
Program Highlights
  • Ten week residential summer program at James Madison University
  • Individual mentored research projects involving cave and karst research
  • Weekly seminars/workshops in karst science and professional development
  • Social activities and Field Trips
  • Housing on the JMU campus and off campus travel provided
  • Students will receive a stipend of $600.00/week  and a food allowance of $100.00/week for the ten weeks
