Everyone in Minneapolis, no matter our race, income, or zip code, should have a safe, stable, affordable home. We have the opportunity to move us closer to making this vision a reality.

The Path to Rent Stabilization in Minneapolis

In November 2021, Minneapolis voters across race, zip code and income levels came together to overwhelmingly say Yes to Question 3. Despite record-setting money spent by developers to scare and divide homeowners and renters, voters made clear they wanted change. By passing this ballot question, the majority of city voters made a clear demand for a rent stabilization ordinance that helps address the housing crisis and protects Minneapolis families from displacement from relentless and unreasonable rent increases.

We need a strong rent stabilization policy to keep our families and our neighbors housed.

Here’s what that looks like:

A Real Cap on Rents

To truly address the housing crisis facing Minneapolis renters, we need a strong policy that’s right for the people of Minneapolis and will actually keep families housed. We are calling for an annual 3 percent cap on rent increases that also includes considerations for inflation, as needed.

2.

Include All Renters

We all deserve a home we can count on both today and tomorrow. To keep our families and communities housed and stable, our policy needs to include all renters - not just some. As a majority renter city, Minneapolis families of all backgrounds, - and especially families of color - are feeling the pressure of rising rent costs. A strong rent stabilization policy must include all renters, no matter if we live in a single family home or apartment highrise.

3.

Protections for Long-Term Renters

Being able to plant roots in our homes and neighborhoods helps make our families thrive and our communities vibrant. Our rent stabilization policy in Minneapolis must prohibit vacancy decontrol, which would allow landlords to hike rent costs after a tenant leaves and result in long-term neighbors being forced out of their homes.
