Latest Update

February 1, 2023

Spring semester began on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Classes will be held in-person and online depending on each student’s specific schedule. We will continue to monitor and communicate any guidance changes or updates. HCC is no longer tracking COVID-19 cases and therefore employees and students are not required to report a diagnosis. Employees and students are encouraged to notify their supervisor or instructor in all instances that they are not able to come to campus due to an illness. The Regional Center for the Advancement of Children will continue to comply with any NCDHHS requirements on reporting of cases.

What can you do to help?

  • Stay home if you feel sick or have tested positive for COVID-19 or other communicable illness such as flu.
  • Clean your workspace often

Face Coverings

Masks are optional on campus. Face coverings will continue to be required if:

  • You are returning for a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 illness on days 6-10.
  • Individuals that perform work or studies at other locations will be required to comply with the face covering requirement in effect at that location.

Please remember that our team WILL work with you if you need to stay home for ANY reason related to COVID-19 so we can all do our part to help reduce the spread of the virus.

FAQ

Haywood Community College continues to take steps to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19. As we determine solutions to keep our employees and students as safe as possible, our goal is, as always, to provide a quality education to all of our students in a safe and effective manner.

  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Frequently wash your hands or use hand sanitizer
  • Notify your supervisor if you are going to be out of work due to illness.
  • For confirmed cases of COVID-19, the College follows the 5+5 model which means you remain off campus for 5 days, with the first day of symptoms being considered day zero, and for the remaining 5 days mask when around others on campus. In order to return after 5 days, one should be fever free for 24-hours without the use of fever reducing medications, and symptoms should be improving.

Classes Resuming

Fall semester will begin on Monday, August 16. Classes will be held in-person and online depending on each student’s specific schedule. We will continue to monitor and communicate any guidance changes or updates.

Masks will be required indoors when social distancing cannot be maintained. Regardless of vaccination status, we are asking everyone to wear their mask to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and the new Delta variant, which is proving to be more contagious than the original strain of the Coronavirus.

There have been many accommodations made to classrooms and campus buildings to assist with social distancing guidance and improve overall safety measures including a recent upgrade to building air filtration systems. As a continuing preventative measure, we will be cleaning and sanitizing high traffic areas, and we encourage frequent hand washing, along with allowing physical distancing where practical.

We have heard from YOU – our students – that you prefer in-person classes. We are asking you to do your part to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 by getting your shot and wearing your mask. The more everyone can do to provide a safe environment, the less likely your class and classmates will be impacted by the virus and have to quarantine or move a class online.

HCC will host a vaccination clinic on Thursday, August 19 from 10am – 5pm.

What can you do to help?

  • We are encouraging all employees and students to get vaccinated. This decreases the likelihood of serious symptoms of the virus should you contract COVID-19.
    • Vaccines are free
    • There are multiple locations you can schedule an appointment or simply walk-in to get your vaccine.
  • Wear your mask when you are in close proximity of someone else. This protects you and those you are around.
  • Wash your hands often
  • Stay home from work or school if:
    • you are sick
    • you are considered a close contact to someone that has COVID-19
    • if someone in your household is sick

  • You (or anyone in your house) has been tested for COVID-19 based on symptoms or contact tracing

Please review the current COVID-19 procedure.

On Friday, May 14, 2021, Governor Roy Cooper announced the following changes (with some limited exceptions):

  • Statewide mask mandate (face coverings) lifted;
  • Social distancing requirements lifted;
  • Limits on mass gatherings lifted;
  • Capacity limits lifted.

Effective immediately, Haywood Community College has updated our procedures to be reflective of these changes. This means face coverings are no longer required (with some exceptions) and social distancing is no longer required.

Face coverings and social distancing protocols are still encouraged, but not required, for unvaccinated people.

In following the Executive Order as related to child care facilities and transportation:

  • Face coverings are still required at the Regional Center for the Advancement of Children;
  • If traveling in a College owned vehicle where more than one person is present.

For those that work or perform services at other locations (clinical settings, K-12 schools, etc.) please adhere to the requirements of that location. Haywood Early College falls under the K-12 guidance.

Nothing prevents employees or students from continuing to wear face coverings. Please keep in mind that individuals should not be asked to disclose their vaccination status or why they are wearing a face covering. This is private information and should be respected at all times.

During this transition time, please be patient as our employees and students make their own decisions about how to continue to protect themselves on campus. For instance, if you meet with someone in a small space, such as a private office, be mindful that your student or fellow employee may request that you meet in an alternate location that allows more distance. You may also see others around campus continue to wear face coverings and as we have said before, we want to be respectful and supportive that we all have differing comfort levels.

Please continue to report:

  • If you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (regardless of vaccination status);
  • If you have an exposure to COVID-19;
  • If you are awaiting a test result for COVID-19, or someone in your household is awaiting a test result;
  • If you are diagnosed with COVID-19.

HCC COVID-19 Response Procedure

Graduation Ceremony Update

Based on the extension of the Phase 2 NC Executive Order and continued restrictions for mass gatherings, the rescheduled HCC graduation date of August 7th has now been canceled. While we sincerely wanted to have a commencement ceremony on our campus, it has become more apparent over the past few weeks that such an endeavor would just not be possible at this time without posing a risk to the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.  Students who were unable to pick-up their credentials during our recent Drive-Up Graduation event will have those mailed to them pending the completion of their classes and conferral by our Registrar’s office. In addition, we will be sending them a Commemorative 2020 Graduation program, as well as a link to a Graduation video recognizing each graduate’s name, credential, and program of study.

Graduates of Haywood Early College should look for additional information from HEC about plans for receiving their diplomas and degrees. A decision about other graduation events such as the Career & College Readiness ceremony, nursing pinning, and medical assisting pinning, will be made and communicated at a later date. (8/7/20 update: CCR graduation ceremony has been canceled. Graduates will be contacted at a later date with further details regarding future ceremony possibilities.)

Guided by NCCCS recommendations and North Carolina’s Phased Modified Stay Home Order, HCC is offering limited in-person classes and services and will continue to monitor and adjust to future on-campus needs.

Classes resuming

Summer Session will begin on Monday, June 9. With a majority of classes following an online format, any in-person learning needs will follow state and local social distancing guidelines. This includes limiting in-person activities to match current restrictions for gatherings, ensuring 6-feet of distance between work stations/tables, installing dividers where appropriate, and increasing the cleaning of high-touch surfaces.

Services

HCC has implemented social distance guidelines on campus and the following services and departments offer both virtual and in-person capabilities: bookstore, cashier, library, and student services in the Hemlock building. Modifications have been made to these student engagement areas, similar to those you may have seen in retail settings. We’ve installed plexiglass dividers where transactions occur, added floor markings for distancing, and adjusted seating areas to reduce the number waiting at any given time.

Safety Guidelines

Our Response Team has prepared safety plans for employees and students to follow during this wave of activity. We will update these documents as the situation changes, however the guiding principle for everything we do during this time is to provide a safe learning and working environment. These guidelines include but are not limited to social distancing floor indicators, the encouragement of wearing face masks, additional cleaning of high-touch areas, staying home if you feel sick, and more.

Moving forward

We anticipate this wave and level of activity to be in place through the end of June. As we look to the start of our Fall semester, additional modifications will be made as necessary. Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility - as we receive state and local guidance, we may make changes to increase or decrease activities as appropriate.

Reminders

Registration: Fall registration is currently underway in a virtual/online format or in-person. We are proceeding with the Fall schedule as originally planned and will make any schedule adjustments, as needed, closer to class start time.

Graduation: Join us on June 16 & 17 (4pm-6pm) to pick up your diploma, credentials, and more via a drive-through event. We are also planning a new date for our 2020 Graduation Ceremony – Friday, August 7, 2020. Stay tuned for more details on reschedule dates for CCR Graduation and health care program Pinnings.

Classes resuming

Limited classes returning in this wave are lab-based with hours remaining to complete the Spring 2020 term that could not be completed in an online environment and limited CE courses in essential sectors. Each of these programs are reviewing classroom/lab areas for modifications needed to ensure social distancing parameters are met. This includes limiting in-person activities to match current restrictions for gatherings, ensuring 6-feet of distance between work stations/tables, installing dividers where appropriate, and increasing the cleaning of high-touch surfaces. Students enrolled in classes resuming at this time will be contacted with new schedule information.

If reopening plans stay on track in NC, we should have more flexibility with our Summer 2020 courses beginning on June 8. Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility - as we receive state and local guidance, we may make changes to increase or decrease activities as appropriate.
