Hackett’s schoolyard is getting a huge upgrade, and we would love your support!

Thanks to the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of both past and present members of the Friends of Hackett board, along with the dedicated leadership team at Hackett Elementary, we are thrilled to announce that the much-anticipated rain garden and schoolyard renovation is finally becoming a reality!

  • At Hackett, our rain garden project is a cutting-edge solution for managing stormwater runoff. By capturing and slowing down rainwater, it minimizes the risk of flooding and erosion while preventing water pollution, ensuring the protection of nearby water bodies. This initiative goes beyond functionality, promoting water conservation by allowing rainwater to infiltrate the soil instead of going into storm drains. Our state-of-the-art rain garden, accompanied by new trees and greenery, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the schoolyard but also fosters biodiversity, creates educational opportunities, and contributes to improved air quality.

  • Transforming the schoolyard at Hackett Elementary goes beyond stormwater management- it extends to the creation of an inspiring Outdoor Classroom. This immersive learning environment will connect students with science and nature. Your support will not only help us build this Outdoor Classroom but also contribute to the development of a unique educational haven where students can explore, learn, and thrive.

  • An exciting part of this project includes an improved school yard and replacing the basketball court. Two brand-new, flat, and brightly painted half courts will provide an ideal space for students to shoot hoops and engage in active play. Our schoolyard will be a hub of energy, fun, and camaraderie! Join us in reshaping the landscape of Hackett Elementary, where every dribble and jump shot represents a step towards a vibrant and invigorating school environment.

Help us Reach Our Goal!

Help us Reach Our Goal!

Our collaboration with the Philadelphia School District has played a crucial role, resulting in a generous $1,681,000 grant from the Philadelphia Water Department dedicated to the stormwater management aspect of this transformative initiative. The landscape architecture firm, Salt Design Studio, have been selected for this project. We're excited to share that Friends of Hackett has successfully secured a $20,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development for the development of our outdoor classroom.

Our focus is on raising the remaining $120,000 to complete various aspects of the project outside of stormwater management. This includes the development of the outdoor classroom, updates to the basketball court, creation of a captivating blacktop mural, and the addition of seating throughout the schoolyard.
