The W. Gary Cannon Psychological Services Center is offering 10 sessions of individual therapy (free of charge) to currently enrolled Fresno City students. We highly recommend you take advantage of their services if you are interested in therapy. 

If you are on campus experiencing a mental health crisis and feel you need to speak to a therapist immediately, we have one of our therapists continually on standby available to help between the hours of 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday with modified hours on Thursday located at SC216 (above the bookstore).

Services

Eligibility

All current active students of Fresno City College (and any community college within the State Center Community College District) are eligible for clinical services. In the event that a student drops their coursework, services may be terminated and appropriate referrals will be offered.

Students may seek Psychological Services for various reasons. The following are some common student concerns: adjustment to college, anxiety, depression, relationship and family issues, personal growth and exploration, grief and loss, stress and anger management, and questions regarding sexual orientation or gender identity.

Intake (Triage) Process

During the initial 15-20 minute intake/triage session, students are informed of SCCCD Psychological Services policies as well as their rights as a client, the limits of confidentiality, and other information pertinent to clinical settings. The best treatment referral options for the student are determined by the therapist during this session, which may include a referral for therapy outside the clinic with a community-based therapist or other resource.

Once students have completed their intake with Psychological Services staff, the therapist will let the student know what treatment is recommended. Students may be asked to pursue any of the following options:

  • Individual therapy through Psychological Services at SCCCD
  • Group therapy through Psychological Services at SCCCD
  • Assessment through Psychological Services at SCCCD

If the therapist determines that the most comprehensive treatment for the student cannot be best addressed by SCCCD Psychological Services, the student may be referred to:

  • Our list of community resources, which include psychiatric services, psychotherapy services, crisis hotlines, and other community clinics/services.

Individual Therapy

If you are a student and you would like to set up therapy, please fill out our online intake form. If you are unable to complete the form due to technical issues, you can complete the PDF version of the form located here: PDF Intake Formor pick up a form from our office.

You can also call the Psychological Services main line (559) 443 - 8687 to let us know you are interested in therapy. Please leave a message with your name, student identification number, and phone number, and one of our clinicians will return the message within 5 - 7 business days.

Talking Circles

Psychological Services also hosts Talking Circles, intended to be a safe place for students to express their feelings on specific topics. In Talking Circles, SCCCD therapists act more as a moderator than a therapist, as the focus is on helping students feel heard.

Assessment

SCCCD Psychological Services offers multiple types of psychological testing for students. If you have concerns that your education is being impacted by an undiagnosed mental health condition such as ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder or Depression, please contact us for further information about our assessment services.

Group Therapy

Psychological Services is excited to offer weekly group therapy opportunities, open to all currently enrolled SCCCD students 18 or over!

  • AAPI Support Group (Mondays 1-2 pm)
    A support group for Asian and Asian American students.  Join us for a six-week exploration of cultural experiences. Begins Jan 15, 2024.
  • Art Therapy Group (Tuesdays 10-11 am)
    We will engage with art and create some of our own in order to express our feelings and learn more about ourselves. Begins Jan 16, 2024.
  • Process Group (Tuesdays, 11:15 am -12:45)
    Join us for a unique opportunity to connect with others and express a variety of experiences in a safe environment. All students are welcome! Begins Jan 9, 2024.
  • Anxiety Toolbox (Thursdays, 1-2 pm)
    Learn coping skills for managing anxiety. We cover topics such as identifying anxiety triggers, relaxation techniques, and cognitive restructuring. Begins Jan 11, 2024.
  • LGBTQ+ Support Group (Thursdays, 2-3 pm)
    Join us for an opportunity to connect with community members and allies to discuss topics related to LGBTQ+ experiences in a safe environment. Begins Jan 11, 2024.

Psychological Services offers walk-in assistance to current students who are experiencing crisis situations. If you are struggling with a serious issue, please feel free to stop by our office during open hours so that we can support you!

If the office is closed and you are:

  • Experiencing thoughts or urges to harm others or end someone else’s life
  • Having suicidal thoughts
  • Experiencing thoughts or urges to harm yourself or end your life
  • Actively engaging in self-harm

Please immediately call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or call SCCCD campus police at 559.442.8201 for assistance.

If you are a faculty member or administrator with non-emergency concerns about a student and you would like to consult with a member of Psychological Services, please call our mainline at 559.443.8687 and leave a message.  A clinician will return the message within 2 – 3 business days.

At this time, staff who have a student in serious crisis (disclosing harm to self or harm to others) should immediately call their Campus Police department or local police to evaluate the student rather than referring to Psychological Services in order to ensure the safety of the student.
