Participants

Succeed in School classes are for youth ages 11 to 18 who may need additional help after school.  Classes help support students in their efforts to complete secondary education, pursue university schooling or vocational training, and become lifelong learners.  Succeed in School resources for primary age children are not currently available.

Succeed in School Classes

Succeed in School classes are guided experiences that strengthen reading, writing, speaking, and mathematics skills. Students also gain study and life skills and learn how to prepare for important exams.

Classes are designed to be places where students can ask questions, actively learn, and rely on their teacher and classmates to strengthen confidence and skills. They are also places where youth can build their faith in Jesus Christ and feel the Holy Ghost. Students receive the benefits of belonging to a group of active learners.

The Succeed in School classes are a supplement to but not a replacement for school. The skills students develop will help them with subjects they are learning in their local schools. Classes are usually taught after school in local meetinghouses by called (volunteer) teachers. Teachers do not need to be professional educators, but many have an educational background. They are provided with scripted lessons and other helpful materials to effectively teach the Succeed in School classes.

Classes are held under the direction of local Church leaders. They are supported by Seminaries and Institutes employees.

Overall Evaluation of Succeed in School

In 2019, an independent research evaluation was conducted to show the initial impact of Succeed in School (2018–19 school year). Students, teachers, parents, and Church leaders who were involved in Succeed in School participated in the research.

The data from reading and mathematics assessments revealed that students who consistently participated in Succeed in School significantly improved in their reading and mathematics skills. Most students also saw an increase in their overall academic performance in school. Student survey responses also show that the majority of students felt that Succeed in School classes positively impacted their ability to read and understand the scriptures, their attendance in church and seminary, and their faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Parents who were surveyed also reported similar positive impacts of Succeed in School classes on their children.

While those surveyed reported that Succeed in School added some required extra time and effort to their lives, they indicated that they felt the benefits of Succeed in School classes were very worthwhile.
