WHY WE RUN

Sallarulo’s Race for Champions will celebrate its 19th year on the campus of Nova Southeastern University on Saturday, November 2. A South Florida institution, the event celebrates respect and compassion for all by providing an opportunity for the entire community to walk or run alongside Special Olympics Florida athletes.

The funds raised through Sallarulo’s Race for Champions support Special Olympics Florida’s programs right here in Broward County, serving more than 6,000 athletes and their families each year. Athletes benefit from year-round sports training and competition in a variety of 19 sports and receive health services, inclusive programming and leadership training all at no cost. Through the transformative power and joy of sport, Special Olympics Florida and Sallarulo’s Race for Champions helps athletes live richer, fuller lives.

History and Founder

Sallarulo’s Race for Champions is an inclusive 5K run/walk that typically takes place each year on the campus of Nova Southeastern University. The Race was founded by Paul Sallarulo, whose relationship with Special Olympics began more than 45 years ago as a volunteer in high school. It deepened when Paul’s son, Patrick, began participating as an athlete at age 8. Patrick is now 30 years old, and for more than two decades has trained and competed in swimming, bocce ball, bowling and skiing. He has traveled throughout Florida and the U.S., building lifelong friendships and memories.
Patrick and his sister Samantha serve each year as Race for Champions team captains.

Paul became involved in fundraising when, to celebrate his 50th birthday, he participated in a half-marathon and raised more than $130,000. His success inspired him to launch Sallarulo’s Race for Champions to raise funds for Special Olympics athletes – like Patrick – in Broward County. Each year, the event grows in size, visibility and fundraising capacity thanks to Paul’s leadership and connection to the community.

Paul’s support of Broward County athletes extends far beyond this event. Over the course of his relationship with Special Olympics Florida, Paul has volunteered countless hours to our mission, raised awareness of what we do, and inspired cash and in-kind donations of more than $7 million!
