2020 Census Mailings
Ninety-five percent of households will receive an initial invitation to respond to the 2020 Census in the mail. Depending on how likely your area is to respond online, you’ll receive either an invitation encouraging you to respond online or an invitation along with a paper questionnaire.
In areas where 20 percent or more of the households need Spanish assistance, the invitations will be in both English and Spanish.
Households that receive a reminder in the mail after responding may disregard it. The reminder was sent before the response was received. Some households that have already responded will receive a census taker visit as part of quality checks on the census.
Letter Invitation Group
Most areas of the country are likely to respond online, so most households will receive a letter asking you to go online to complete the census questionnaire (or to respond by phone).
Letter Invitation and Paper Questionnaire Group
Areas that are less likely to respond online will receive a paper questionnaire along with their invitation. The invitation will also include information about how to respond online or by phone.

The 2020 Census Is Ready for America to Respond
For the first time, nearly everyone will be invited to respond online, by phone or by mail.
What households will receive in the mail:
On or between March 12-20

Every household that hasn’t already responded will receive additional reminders and will eventually receive a paper questionnaire.
What households that haven’t responded yet will receive in the mail:
On or between March 26-April 3
On or between April 8-30*
*Extended from April 8-16 to allow more time for addressing the mail packages in the midst of social distancing.
On or between April 27-May 9*
*Pushed back from April 20-27 to allow the paper questionnaire package to arrive several days ahead of the final postcard.
