MNGOT: MEd and Initial Teaching License (K-6 Elementary or K-12 ESL)

We are currently accepting applications for our K-6 Elementary MNGOT Reading Corps program. This pathway is designed for non-licensed Reading Corps members with bachelor’s degrees (see Reading Corps website for eligibility) who are interested in earning a master’s degree and license in K-6 Elementary Education. The next cohort for the K-6 Elementary MNGOT Reading Corps program begins Fall 2024. About the program:

  • Two-year, 36-credit K-6 Elementary initial licensure and MEd program
  • Coursework is hybrid (online with face-to-face meetings once a month)
  • Program designed to be completed while serving
  • Student teaching occurs in year two while serving as a Reading Corps tutor

Are you interested in K-12 ESL Licensure?

We are currently accepting applications for our K-12 ESL MNGOT program. This pathway is designed for non-licensed district staff with bachelor’s degrees, including paraprofessionals, educational assistants, substitute/reserve teachers, and Tier 2 teachers who are interested in earning a master's degree and license in K-12 ESL. The next cohort for K-12 ESL begins Fall 2024.

About the program:

  • Two-year, 36-credit K-12 ESL initial licensure and MEd program
  • Coursework is hybrid (online with face-to-face meetings once a month)
  • Coursework is designed to be completed while working

Student teaching:

  • One or two year paid student teaching residency (dependent on funding) or
  • 16 weeks of student teaching or
  • Work as a Tier II teacher of record

Program schedule

Year One: Work full-time at your school and complete 18 credits of coursework and 100 hours of field experience. Field experience can often be completed at the school site where you are employed.

Year Two: Depending on the cohort and year, there are two options for student teaching while completing the remaining 18 credits of coursework. All student teaching is supervised by the University.

  • MNGOT Reading Corps K-6 elementary students: half day, full year of student teaching at school site
  • MNGOT ESL students: One or two year paid student teaching residency (dependent on funding) or 16 weeks of student teaching or Work as a Tier II teacher of record

Tuition and financial aid information

We are able to offer a reduced rate of $600 per credit. The 36-credit program will cost a total of $21,600; this rate will save participants nearly $3000. In addition, working is allowable during at least the first year of the program, depending on individual student teaching scenarios and district employment opportunities. Generous scholarships are available for eligible students.

Dates and deadlines

  • October 1, 2023: Application opens
  • December 1, 2023: Priority application deadline
  • May 15, 2024: Final application deadline
  • September 2024: Program begins (late August virtual orientation)

Please note: an interview and admission decision will occur following each application deadline. Candidates only need to participate in one application round.
