Alabama Republican U.S. Senate candidate Katie Britt called out one of her GOP rivals on Monday, questioning why former prisoner of war and Huntsville businessman Mike Durant won’t commit to debates.
“I’ve agreed to multiple proposed debates between myself, Mike Durant and Mo Brooks,” Britt tweeted Monday. “Congressman Brooks, to his credit, has also agreed. Why won’t Mr. Durant?”
Durant, who was rescued after his helicopter was shot down over Somalia and he was taken hostage in 1993, is leading the money race with more than $4 million cash on hand. He also was the leading vote-getter in a an independent poll released last month that showed him with 33 percent support, ahead of Britt’s 23 percent and Brooks’ 12 percent.
He could not be reached by AL.com for a response to Britt.
The Alabama Republican Party is holding a series of debates between candidates for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate that will be televised across the state.
Last week, Brooks also criticized Durant’s reluctance to debate.
“Mike Durant has the public policy chops of a snail,” Brooks, the congressman from Huntsville, said at a campaign town hall in Huntsville.
