My Ol’ Kentucky home deserves a purple heart.

I was born and raised in the hollers of eastern Kentucky. I’ve hunkered down a few times, but have never had to witness the hell of a tornado the likes of which devastated my friends in western Kentucky this past weekend. The images and stories coming out of the town of Mayfield are heartbreaking. It looks like a war zone.

One monster tornado drove a path of destruction on the ground for about 227 miles, ripping a gaping wound through the hearts, souls and communities of the heartland. Western Kentucky took the brunt of the damage, but eight states were impacted by the rampage.

Thoughts and prayers for the victims are appreciated. So are donations. Let’s rally around our friends and neighbors who are suffering.

On Saturday, Kentucky’s Gov. Beshear announced the creation of a new state-wide relief fund. Team Western Kentucky Relief Fund will go directly to Kentucky tornado victims. Go to teamwkyrelieffund.ky.gov to donate.
