Democrats hold a 22-18 edge in the Virginia State Senate. Members serve four-year terms.

These elections will be held using redistricted boundaries created as a result of the 2020 Census. This has led to a larger than normal turnover, even before the general election ballots are cast. Ten incumbents did not seek reelection, while five others lost in their party's primary. 

Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Competitive Races

Barring any major surprises, Democrats will win at least 19 seats: 2 uncontested and 17 rated safe. Republicans will win at least 15: 3 uncontested and 12 rated safe.

The remaining six seats will determine which party emerges with control. The President of the Senate, Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, can break ties, so Democrats must win two of the seats to maintain control.

District ratings are derived from CNalysis and Elections Daily. Where they differ, the more competitive (closer to Toss-up) rating is displayed.

Incumbent is defined here as a sitting State Senator on the ballot in that district. Due to redistricting, they may currently represent a district with a different number and geography.
