Scholarship Overview

PURPOSE:
To enhance diversity in the Middle Tennessee tech industry, the WiTT Diversity Scholarship supports a female student in the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area who comes from a traditionally underrepresented minority within IT and intends to pursue a career in a technology-related field.


THE AWARD:
WiTT will award a $5000 First Place Winner and two $2,500 Runner Up scholarships that will be applied to the winners' accounts for the fall academic semester. Winners must provide WiTT with college enrollment and financial aid information.

REQUIREMENTS:
To be considered, applicants must: 

  • Be a female student  
  • Be a graduating high school senior enrolling in a 4-year college/university next fall OR an active college freshman, sophomore, or junior enrolled 4-year college/university within the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area (Cannon, Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Macon, Maury, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson, and Wilson counties) 
  • Identify as a race/ethnicity that is a traditionally underrepresented minority within the Middle Tennessee Tech Industry* 
  • Have a passion for technology and plan to pursue a career in a technology-related field  
  • Demonstrate high academic achievement with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale 
  • Submit a complete application (including supplementary materials) by April 15th
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a WiTT scholarship

The WiTT Diversity Scholarship is designed to address and increase historically underrepresented racial minorities in Middle Tennessee IT. The 2019 State of Middle Tennessee Tech, produced by the Middle Tennessee Tech research program, found that only 20.9% of the Middle Tennessee tech workforce identify as Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander, African Amer
APPLICATION MATERIALS:
Applicants will need to submit the following materials by April 15 in order to to be considered: 

  • Completed application 
  • Resume showcasing academic achievements, community involvement, internships or work experience, etc. 
  • Transcript showing GPA on 4.0 scale; if another grading scale is utilized, applicants should work with their respective guidance counselor or academic advisor to calculate the GPA on a 4.0 scale 
  • Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or person from the student’s community who is not a relative 
  • Essay: As part of an underrepresented group, how has that experience formed who you are today, and how do you plan to use that experience in a career in technology to lift up others in the future? 
    • Particular attention will be paid to student’s efforts in supporting the community and interest in a technology-related career 
    • Particular attention will be paid to grammar, spelling, style and presentation 
    • Up to two pages (1.5 to double line spacing)
