Agenda

  1. Welcome and introductions (10 minutes)
  2. Presentation: Metadata and Searchability: Creating Easier Access and Use of the Michigan Supreme Court Records and Briefs by Jamie Chmara, Wayne State University (20 minutes)
The Michigan Supreme Court Records and Briefs are an essential resource for researching legal precedent in the state. Early in its history, the Court established a practice of distributing print copies of these documents to the Michigan State Law Library and each of the five academic law libraries in the state. There was little consistency in how each library organized these materials which presented a challenge for researchers who needed access to them. In 2019, the Wayne State University Law Library was awarded an IMLS grant to support the digitization of its collection of the Michigan Supreme Court Records and Briefs from 1850 to 2011. The goal of this project was to make these materials easily accessible on the Internet at no cost to the user, with multiple access points for easier discoverability. Our Law Library collaborated with publisher partners Google Books and LLMC Digital who were responsible for scanning and OCR activities. The chosen metadata categories were based on access points identified by law librarians experienced with assisting researchers in using the Wayne State collection. My role in this project was to extract metadata from each document in a collection exceeding 1,440 linear feet. Last year, I participated in two presentations (ORALL and MichALL) where we discussed our project with law librarians across the state, and received positive responses in regards to the easier access of this material. I am excited to share my experience with the academic library community as this project nears its completion.
  1. Facilitated discussion: Cataloging and Metadata Workflows (50 minutes)
Join in a discussion about the core of many of our workflows -- documentation! How does your department manage its documentation? What works, and what would you like to improve? How do you balance documentation maintenance with other time demands? Bring your thoughts, your questions, and your ideas to share!
  1. Future coffee hours/meet-ups (10 minutes)
Lets do it again!
