ASKIN--Frank. The American Civil Liberties Union mourns the loss of Frank Askin, who died on July 1, 2021 at the age of 89. Askin was an esteemed member of the ACLU's National Board for 40 years as well as its longest-serving general counsel. Askin was also a Distinguished Professor of Law, Robert E. Knowlton Scholar, and Director of the Constitutional Rights Clinic at Rutgers University. As a student, he introduced the legal director of the ACLU to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of his professors, during a visit to Rutgers. She would go on to found the organization's Women's Rights Project. Askin and Ginsburg served together as ACLU general counsel for several years before her appointment to the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Professor Askin was also a member of the ACLU of New Jersey's affiliate board. He served as one of the ACLU's general counsels for 36 years and then as general counsel emeritus until his death. Frank Askin will be remembered as a tenacious and powerful force for justice, who as an activist and advocate made a tremendous contribution to the ACLU.
